# Summary

SKÜLLBOX is a roleplaying game where players take on the roles of floating skulls defending their dungeon from heroic raiders by inhabiting magical boxes with unique abilities, especially suitable for Halloween-themed gameplay.

# Abstract

SKÜLLBOX is an easy-to-play tabletop roleplaying game that pits players, as floating skulls, against waves of raiders from the Land of Everbliss intent on stealing the Golden Apple of Discord. Each player controls a Skull within a magical sarcophagus, employing distinct powers to repel the invaders. The game features a variety of Skull characters, such as the Bonebox Musician, who makes raiders headbang, and the Mimic Box, which is not what it seems. Players also set up "Psychotic Traps" like the Doppelganger Mosh Pit and the Room Within a Room Within A Room to thwart the raiders. Although there are some minor flaws such as typos and layout issues, the game is praised for its simple rules, engaging comix-style art, and an anti-establishment tone that doesn't require a significant time investment. An expansion, SKÜLLBOX: Halloween Tricks, adds new characters and challenges, including a new boss, Baba Yaga, and is available for free download.

SKÜLLBOX is the Right Kind of Bad-Wrong-Fun

Anti-establishment Skulls defend their dungeon with the powers of Mosh, Cool, and Weird

“You’re a bunch of floating skulls with a problem. A bunch of no-good, wanna-be hero raiders from the Land of Everbliss are going to come to your dungeon and take your stuff! Now it’s time to get inside of magyk boxes, build psychotic traps, and kick their butts!”

— SKÜLLBOX

SKÜLLBOX is exceedingly easy to play. The Skulls must repel three waves of Raiders — ESTABLISHMENT “heroes”— trying to steal the Golden Apple of Discord. You do this by inhabiting an animated sarcophagus — a magic box. Each Skull has their own method of stomping the Raiders.

  • The Bonebox Musician compels Raiders to headbang instead of doing their job.
  • The Lich in a Box is a meta-necromancer.
  • The Mimic Box is more than meets the eye.
  • The ShroomBox is a bad influence on Raiders…or maybe a good one?
  • The Stygian Juggerbox is a crowd-pleaser — ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!
  • The TinderBox sets things on fire.

The Skulls also build fun Psychotic Traps, like the Doppelganger Mosh Pit and the Room Within a Room Within A Room.

The Raiders are portrayals of typical fantasy fighters and magic users and whatnot. There’s even a Boss, Saint-Queen Sophronia. She wants to use the Apple’s power to conquer the world with her particular brand of radio-pop.

SKÜLLBOX is not flawless. There are a few typos and the layout sometimes puts key art in the middle of the fold of the physical book.

But the comix-style art is great, the rules are simple, the tongue-in-cheek anti-establishment tone works, and it doesn’t require much time commitment.

SKÜLLBOX: Halloween Tricks adds more madness. Now the Raiders want all your candy too! To stomp ’em good, you can be one of four new boxes…

  • The Candybox lures Raiders with no impulse control to their doom.
  • The Box O’ Chainsaws is chainsaws…although the box’s rules don’t really match the art. You might want to reskin this one.
  • The Puzzlebound Box is Pinhead if Pinhead was the box.
  • The Anubox curses Raiders for the rest of the Raid.

Halloween Tricks also includes new Raiders and a new Boss, Baba Yaga — who has the insidious power to summon, curse, and polymorph Skulls! That’s not right!

A devil-may-care gamemaster could easily adapt the Skulls to Mörk Borg, EZD6, or Quarrel + Fable. Designers can even make compatible content with its third-party license.

Like Havoc Brigade and Kobolds Ate My Baby, SKÜLLBOX is un-serious Wrong-Bad-Fun. And for only $5 — Halloween Tricks is free to download — you get a lot of fun. SKÜLLBOX might be THE Halloween roleplaying game.
