QUARREL + FABLE: the basic experts
or how to onboard those used to class-and-level games

If you’re used to old school game systems where you select a class at the outset which manages a lot of secondary decisions for you, the open-ended character creation of games like QUARREL + FABLE can be daunting.
I’ve collected here starter packages for each of the seven classes from Basic Dungeons & Dragons — special skills, stat biases, and debt suggestions.
The Humans
Fighting Man
- prioritise SKILL when advancing
- take combat, endurance, and insight as special skills
- mark debt to a local blacksmith — and name them
Wizard Woman
- prioritise STAMINA when advancing (Q+F spellcasting drains health)
- take magic, rituals, and learning as special skills
- mark debt in overdue library fines — what’s the surprising subject?
Holy Person
- prioritise LUCK when advancing
- take rituals, oration, and worship as special skills
- mark debt in indulgences — what sins are you escaping?
Thieving Just-A-Little-Guy
- prioritise SKILL when advancing
- take climb, hide, and ambush as special skills
- mark debt as backdated union fees — why solo so long?
The Not Humans
Dwarf
- prioritise STAMINA when advancing
- take stone, craft, and observe as special skills
- mark debt as bridge investments — is this a repair or a new bridge?
Elf
- prioritise SKILL when advancing
- take tree, craft, and lead as special skills
- mark debt to imported ice — what were you using it for?
Underhild
- prioritise LUCK when advancing
- take feast, orate, and resist as special skills
- mark debt to the family gift catalogue — who snubbed you last year?
Bonus party cohesion guidelines
Take two of the characters at random and consider which skill of theirs are most contrasting. Generate a truth that combines and juxtaposes this truth, and hang the party off of that.
For example, we’ve a fighter and an underhild in this group. It feels that combat and orate are especially disparate, so the group got together putting on travelling shows demonstrating martial prowess of a variety of international styles.
Why not share your favourite Q+F module with your regular group this week?
