Sitting in Sorrow

It’s important to feel the pain, feel the sorrow so that you can be of service

Yesterday I allowed myself to feel the pain. To feel the sorrow. To feel the grief. To feel the feelings I had held back. Ever since learning of the horrific murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota I have felt deeply this immeasurable pain. The pain that I feel though is nothing compared to the pain that black Americans feel and have felt for generations.

I normally write about joy, but I am not ready to write about joy yet. That day will come again. Right now my heart feels deep sorrow, a very deep sadness that I must sit in. I must feel all of it, day in and day out. I must see how I can be of service. I must see how I can learn. I must see how I can listen. I must see how I can help.

This is a poem about feeling through the pain:

Sitting under a tree.

Sitting in the pain.

Sitting in the sorrow.

Sitting in the horror.

Sitting in the tears.

Until I can find joy again,

Here I sit.

Until I can spread light again,

Here I sit.

Until I can see happiness again,

Here I sit.

I feel through it all.

I will see hope tomorrow.

I will see joy tomorrow.

I will see light tomorrow.

It will all come back if I sit through this pain.

I invite all of you to truly sit through your feelings when you have them. Sometimes I try to “action” my way out of feelings. Finally giving in to the tears and the pain is the only way forward. We must feel to be able to heal, to be able to be of service and to show up and take action in our communities.

How have you sat in your feelings?
