Simple Yet Effective Ways to Reduce Your Daily Waste

Be a smart person and make little adjustments in your lifestyle.

Reducing your daily waste is not that hard at all.

If you are determined to produce less waste, you can surely do it by making some little adjustments in your day-to-day life. And the tiny changes that I will discuss here in this post are super simple and won’t cost a dime. However, they will save your money and make you a conscious person.

So, let’s go into the details and start adopting some simple changes to make this world a better place.

Carry a Reusable Water Bottle

While you are going to the office or anywhere outside of your home for a few hours or days, you should carry a reusable water bottle with you. It will allow you to have drinking water anytime, anywhere, without purchasing a one-time plastic water bottle. This way it will save your money as well.

I always carry a reusable water bottle with me when I go on a tour. It helps me reduce my daily waste and saves me some money as well. You can do that as well. All you need is to purchase a good quality water bottle that you can use for a long time. In that case, a lightweight, sleek, stainless steel water bottle can serve your purpose the best.

I highly recommend you carry a water bottle with you while you are outside of your home. It is good for your wallet as well as the environment.

Use a Reusable Grocery Bag

You will be surprised to know that we use 500 billion plastic bags per year. Why do we use such a humongous amount of plastic bags? Because it’s convenient and free of cost.

We go shopping empty-handed and come home with a handful of plastic bags. And in most cases, we throw them in the bin and forget it. But you should know that a plastic bag takes more than 400 years to degrade. That means the plastic bag you throw away will continue to pollute the environment generations after generation. But the good thing is you can save the environment from that disaster.

Just carry a reusable grocery bag whenever you go to buy grocery items or shop. It will significantly reduce your daily plastic use. And thus, your overall daily waste will be lower as well.

Buy a good quality reusable bag and use it whenever you go to buy some grocery items.

Think Before Purchasing Anything (Especially Food & Cloth)

To reduce your daily waste, you must purchase wisely. What I mean is you need to be rational before buying anything. Do not fall prey to the trends and buy unmindfully the things that you don’t need. Don’t be an ultimate consumer who goes with the current flow and purchases without a second thought. Especially when it comes to food and clothes, people go mad, buy blindly and then waste.

Food waste is a huge problem in the USA as the annual food waste has an approximate value of $161 billion. It’s a sad reality that America wastes nearly 40 percent of its total food, while 11 people die of hunger in each minute around the globe. Again, the fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters of the environment. They convinced you to buy something (in the name of fast fashion, trends, etc.) you don’t need.

So, keep your buying habit checked. Buy foods in a quantity that will not go to waste, and buy clothes and other items based on your necessity, not to show off.

Avoid Single-Use Plastic Whenever Possible

It’s extremely tough to completely get rid of single-use plastics as we are drowning in the sea of them. Yes, these plastics are everywhere. But if you become a little more conscious, you can avoid using single-use plastics.

For example, you can carry a quality water bottle whose cap can be used as a cup. Thus you can have tea or coffee from any cafe avoiding the one-time disposable cups. You can also make a habit of bypassing plastic shopping bags, package foods, food takeout containers, forks, etc.

Avoiding single-use plastics is not easy. But with deliberate efforts, you can use fewer plastics and thus reduce your daily waste.

Go Paperless

Another great way to reduce your daily waste is to go paperless. If you are working in an office, try to reduce your paper consumption following the below suggestions —

  • Do not print unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Use both sides of the paper and keep the paper margin to the lowest.
  • Keep your files in Google Drive or cloud storage.
  • Share documents in soft-copy through email, messenger, etc.
  • Use a notepad app instead of having a physical notepad.
  • Inspire family members and co-workers to print less.

In our workplace, we unmindfully waste paper and think that it’s not a big deal. But research suggests that the paper industry is one of the biggest polluters as it destroys forests and wastes water.

So, if we can minimize our paper use, we can surely reduce our daily waste and make the environment a little bit better.

Reduce Organic Waste by Composting

More than 25% of your trash items can be used for making compost that you can use in your backyard to grow vegetables or flower plants.

Learn how to cut organic waste from life by composting and practice in your day-to-day life. You may also read Walter Bowne’s guide ‘Home Composting Made Easy’ to learn more about composting.

Composting is a crucial way to reduce your daily waste and also reduce your carbon footprint.

To Conclude

When you adopt these simple yet effective changes to reduce your daily waste, you become a conscious person. And the changes you make in life matter. Because seeing your lifestyle, other people may get inspired to do the same.

Remember, no one can change the wrongs we have already done to our environment alone. But we all can introduce tiny changes in our daily life to reduce waste and ultimately better our environment bit by bit.
