Side Hustles Aren’t Aspirational. They’re Survival Mode

I’ve always been a big fan of the side hustle concept. The idea of making money on the side, while still keeping a day job.

The internet has opened up a world of opportunities that weren’t available a few decades ago. You can look beyond mowing lawns, babysitting and washing cars. You can do them from the comfort of your own home.

I’ve chronicled some of those I’ve tried (with varying levels of success).

But I think it’s worth fully understanding what you’re getting in return for your efforts.

Not all side hustles are created equally:

Not all have the leverage that allows you to think beyond trading your time for a bit of money. Not all give you an opportunity for growth, or put you on a journey towards something bigger. Not all allow you to be your own boss.

Sometimes, it’s simply about survival. And that’s ok. We don’t all have to be captains of industry or cutting-edge entrepreneurs.

Just understand what game you’re playing.

Don’t get me wrong, side hustles have incredible value. 39% of the US population has a side hustle. And it’s plain to see why currently.

Inflation has taken a massive bite out of our pockets. Wage growth in many countries has stagnated. Job security isn’t what it was. We all need ways to fight back. That’s where side hustles step in.

But don’t expect the side hustle dream to be easy.

And if you want to exist beyond “survival” (inconsistent income, trading time for money, below minimum wage returns), you have to think beyond the basics. Have goals, plans, systems, leverage and life alignment. Maybe even think in terms of making it your main hustle.

I love the value that side hustles can add to lives. There’s been a transference of economic power in recent years that shouldn’t be ignored.

Just realize that if you want your side hustle to be more than just extra dollars to cover the bills, you’ve got to be intentional.
