Should We Stop Using Cliches?
Actually, many of them are great sayings for our monkey minds

Yes. Cliches can be good for our monkey minds.
Why else would these over used words or phrases be so popular? Be repeated so often they become clichés?
Because they’re good phrases!
Pace Yourself.
I’ve been saying that to myself a lot lately.
This morning I had to laugh at myself. My thinking went something like this…
Laura, this is such a cliché! Pace Yourself?! Can’t you come up with something deeper? Cleverer? More powerful?! You’re a life coach, girl. Can’t you come up with something unique?
As I reflected on this, I thought
Well, No.
No, I don’t need to come up with something cleverer than this.
This phrase is actually perfect for where I am in my life and business right now.
The back story
You see, I recently decided to level up and grow my small business. The 90 day challenge of my Mastermind Group has been to review our businesses. As, if we could, would, should start with a clean slate.
If I had a clean slate, what would I like to manifest in my life and business? What do I want them to look like in 1 year, 3 years, 5 years?
This was a fun and powerful exercise!
I got a lot of clarity, energy, focus, support from my Mastermind Group. I created a master plan of all the content and services I wanted to create. One of my secret powers is organization skills, so I created a Master To Do list that I could review, check off, and guide me through all the new products and services I wanted to create and launch.
And, then I had to …. Wait for it …. Pace. Myself.
Because, as I started, I put in a lot of hours, as you do when you start things, full of energy, excitement, eagerness.
And, the products and services are taking longer to create than I thought they would.
Pretty normal, though.
I could see I couldn’t just slap out something. I’m taking the long view. I want to produce quality products and services. I’m not trying to do them perfectly, but am committed to create good quality, good value, create with care.
The types of products and services I would love to have.
The phrase that I started repeating recently is
Pace Yourself. Laura, Pace. Yourself.
And, my other favorite cliche right now is …
Start as you want to go on.
I want to use the power of boundaries in my own life
You see, I want to establish boundaries around the times of the day and week I work. I want to allow time, outside of work, for exercise, play, friends, family.
You know, the things we all want more of in our lives.
I constantly coach my clients about setting boundaries. So, I coached myself to set boundaries! Duh. But, so cool to coach things I need to use in my own life.
One of the boundaries I created for myself is office hours. Especially since, like many, I am working at home, where boundaries can blur. My office hours are afternoons 1–6P.
And, the boundaries feel great. They are working for me.
I don’t need to create all the products and services this week, this month, right now, all at the same time. I want to … Pace. Myself!
Using cliches from other parts of our lives
You see, I am also a runner. I particularly like long distance running. And, in long distance running you must pace yourself. We runners have all seen (or experienced!) times when other runners started out too fast, too hard and peaked way before the end of the race, the journey. Failed to finish. Bonked. Tanked.
I love running slow. I mentally know exactly when I’ve slipped into my I-could-run-forever speed!
And so I have to figure that speed out for my business development, my growth, the creation of these products and services.
These clichés, these words, this mindset is, actually, really helping me right now. Helping me level up and grow my self and my business.
The cliches helping me with my monkey mind
- To pace myself.
- To start as I intend to go on.
- To enjoy the journey.
- To celebrate the successful wins and milestones along the way.
The work, the new products and services, are there waiting for me. They will emerge at the right time, at the right pace. I’ve got great clarity about what they are. They just aren’t coming out as fast as I wanted.
Final Thoughts
I’m embracing these clichés right now. They allow me to sleep at night! They allow me to enjoy the other parts of my life that I love and want to keep around.
Clichés? Well, yes. Yes, they are.
They’ve been said again and again for a reason, haven’t they?
I’m not embarrassed to say I couldn’t come up with more clever sayings to quiet my monkey mind. They are working for me.
What clichés are working for you in your life? Or, that you’d like to have working for you in your life?
