ShortForm, Flash Fiction, and Drabbles

Short stories with a purpose

Do you write short stories? What is the difference between short form, micro-fiction and flash fiction?

Whether you just enjoy mini plots that can be read while waiting at a traffic light (please don’t try that. Really!), or you have an attention problem and can’t finish long novels, you probably know all about the types of short stories that are designed to be read very quickly. But why so many categories? There’s quite a bit of overlap in definitions, so check for the rules of the publication you are writing for.

Flash Fiction:

Flash fiction is distinguished for its ability to convey deep truths and universal human emotions in just a few short paragraphs, and can even be defined as a very short story. While there is no set word count that separates flash fiction from more traditional short stories, flash fiction stories can be as short as a few words (while short stories typically run for several pages). Flash fiction is also known as sudden fiction, short-short stories, microfiction, or microstories.

Micro-fiction:

It’s a subset of flash fiction — those extremely short stories usually told in 1,000 words or less. Definitions do vary, but for the most part, microfiction is any story told in 300 words or less, and could even be as short as a few words.

Other terms for short writing:

You can go even shorter: how about a 100-word story or even 50 words? Is it possible? Lots of people have been writing these, and they’re known by different names; drabbles (100 words), mini-sags (usually 50 or 60 words), and micro stories are just some of the more common terms.

Want to write short stories or articles on Medium? Keep in mind the rules about writing short form posts, especially if you’re trying to earn money from your writing:

Shortform posts will not generate any views, reads, or average reading time statistics from views from the profile or publication feeds. It will only generate these statistics if a reader clicks into the post.”
