Shh! Montenegro’s Best Kept Secret

Mysterious and magical…

Montenegro is a gorgeous country on the Adriatic coastline, teeming with rich history, natural beauty and coastal towns.

I’ve spent nearly 2 months living here and I’m already planning on returning to this beautiful country in the future.

“Why?” You might ask. “Haven’t you seen everything after living there for two months?”

Well, I’ve been living in two coastal towns, the sleepy little town of Herceg Novi, and the popular tourist destination of Kotor. I haven’t strayed far from the coastline, as I love being near the sea — specifically close enough to go for a dip every day after work!

Why I Love Living In Kotor

More specifically, Dobrota (a neighbourhood in Kotor). I love it because it’s convenient and beautiful. You have everything you need here. There is a food shop a few minutes’ walk away with a bus stop right next to it and the beach just down the hill from the shop.

Dobrota is just a 10-minute bus ride from the Old Town of Kotor and the bus costs 1 euro per ride. You can also visit other towns close by like Perast, where you can see the beautiful artificial island just offshore, called ‘Our Lady of the Rocks’.

The Secret: North Montenegro

Last weekend I was lucky enough to see Montenegro from a different perspective. I went to the North of Montenegro and saw a whole new side to this beautiful country.

The North of Montenegro is pure, unspoilt nature.

Lush wildflower meadows of yellow, white and violet blanket the valleys.

Tall pine trees cast their shadows over the winding serpentine roads.

Wild plants squeeze through the cracks in the rugged grey rocks, eager to glimpse the sunlight.

A real-life fairy tale landscape.

Durmitor National Park

This place captured my imagination and my heart all at once!

I’ve never seen such a mysteriously beautiful sight as the Black Lake in Durmitor National Park. Named the Black Lake after the black pine trees that surround it.

The snowy peak of Durmitor Mountain was shrouded by ominous grey clouds, casting a gloomy shadow on the lake.

Despite the eerie, gloomy atmosphere, I have never felt as close to nature as I did then. I could feel the hum of energy all around me, pure and unspoiled natural beauty.

Peace and calm fell over me as I wandered around the lakeside, quietly taking in the beautiful scenery.

It was then that I decided that I must return to this place in the future. A couple of hours here was just not enough for me.

I have visions of myself curled up in front of a crackling log fire, in one of the little houses with pointy tin roofs, writing away on my laptop with inspiration burning inside of me.

It’s no wonder that local people here still believe in fairy tales and folklore. There is something undeniably magical about this place and I can’t quite put my finger on it!

I hope to return to the north of Montenegro in the colder months in future. I’d love to try skiing here (it would be my first time!). Apparently skiing here is very cheap, with a day ski pass costing only 9 euros! There are plenty of hiking trails to get lost on too, with different lakes and mountains waiting to be explored.

The northern part of Montenegro has ignited my imagination, and I can’t wait to return someday.

I hope this article has sparked your imagination and inspired you to visit Montenegro.
