Calling all Digital Nomads: Are you looking for a quiet getaway?

Herceg Novi is the perfect place for you!

As digital nomads, we are often browsing online for our next working holiday destination. Sometimes we’re searching for an exciting destination that’s full of life and activities. Other times we need to become a recluse for a month or two, to gather our thoughts and focus our energy on our work.

To Schengen or Not to Schengen…

If you’re from the UK like me, you might know about the rules for the Schengen and non-Schengen countries. Due to Brexit, we Brits can only stay in Schengen countries for up to 90 days at a time. Then we have to leave Schengen countries for 90 days before we can return. This means that time in our favourite European destinations like France, Spain, Portugal and Italy has been cut short.

I’ve found somewhat of a solution — a place of solace for those 90 days when you can’t enter Schengen countries…

Montenegro!

Have you heard of this country before? Many people haven’t!

Montenegro is not part of the European Union and is therefore not counted in Schegen/non-Schengen countries. As a tourist, you can stay in Montenegro for up to 90 days at a time.

If you’ve heard of Montenegro, then maybe you’ve heard of Kotor or Budva, am I right?

Well, let me introduce you to your next digital nomad destination — Herceg Novi! Meaning ‘New Castle’ in Montenegrin.

Herceg Novi

Herceg Novi is a sleepy little town, close to the Montenegro-Croatia border. It’s the perfect place to relax and unwind whilst also getting your head down to work.

It’s a simple seaside town with plenty of beaches, cafes and restaurants to enjoy. There is a small Old Town that is often referred to as the ‘City of Stairs’ because there are over 200 steps leading up from the promenade to the Old Town.

You’ll find plenty of restaurants along the promenade and in the Old Town, however many of these don’t open until the summer season. My favourite restaurant there, ‘Splendido’ has a wide range of dishes and something that everyone will like.

There is also an ‘old school’ gym on the promenade which you can go to for 35 euros a month.

Prices in Herceg Novi are slightly cheaper than in Croatia (Split & Dubrovnik) and the coastline is just as beautiful.

My thoughts

I recently departed from Herceg Novi and was sad to leave. I know for certain that I will return one day. I stayed in an apartment just a 2-minute walk from the beach. Once finishing work for the day, I spent each afternoon sunbathing and frolicking in the sea.

The solace that I found in this tiny town kickstarted my writing journey on Medium and allowed me to find a creative headspace.

If you feel like you need to get away from it all, focus on yourself and your work and enjoy the beauty of nature, Herceg Novi is the perfect location for you.

I hope I’ve introduced you to a new possibility for your digital nomad adventures! What are your favourite digital nomad locations?
