Selena sighed in relief and pocketed Lisa’s phone. Venting at Morgan felt so good. Put the bitch in her place. But there would be complications and immediate action was needed. Selena got up from the bed and hurried to the kitchen, passing by the still-restrained Lisa. One step at a time.

She grabbed a knife and headed to the sofa. “Lisa.”

“What’re you doing with that?”

“What?” Selena laughed. “You’re so silly. I’m cutting up fruit and cheese. We’ll take it with us.”

“With us?”

“You know how I’ve been wanting to get away with you? Spend the rest of our lives together in someplace peaceful? There’s a cute cabin in Oregon I’ve purchased with several acres of woods and a stream running through it. It’s so quaint. But we have to leave now. Quickly.”

“No, you can’t. You’ve got to let me go.”

“I need total cooperation from you. Total and complete cooperation.” Selena narrowed her eyes and gripped the knife. “Understand?”

“Selena …” Lisa began pleading and holding back tears.

Selena pounded the counter with the knife in her fist and yelled. “Lisa! Do you understand me?”

“Yeah, yeah, I understand.” Lisa squinted, stopping another tear, and watching confused as Selena turned and cut up food on the table.

“There, there, that’s better. We’re going to have a wonderful time.” Selena was all smiles and sickly sweet but her movements were quick and jerky and she darted from the table to the kitchen with bags and back again packing up strawberries, apple slices, and cheese.

“And we have plenty of leftover Pad Thai.” Selena looked satisfied. “That’ll taste so good for dinner.” Selena bagged the food and hurried to her bedroom. In what seemed like only a few minutes she brought out a large suitcase. “Did you like the Pad Thai?”

Lisa was silent. Such a mundane question totally stunned her into silence.

“Did you like the Pad Thai?” Selena was impatient.

“Yes, yes, I did.”

“Answer me when I ask you a question.” She ran fingers through her hair. “You’re not cooperating, Lisa.” She unzipped the luggage bag and rummaged through it, finding a thin tank top. “You’re going to wear this when we go out so I don’t have to worry about you running away. Or going crazy.”

“I won’t.” Lisa winced from how the ropes were pulling on her back. Sitting up would feel so good.

“But you might. And we can’t risk that.” Selena reached in her pocket and pulled out Lisa’s car key. “How much gas does your car have?”

“I don’t know.” Lisa bit her lip.

“Think.”

“It was full when I drove up.”

“Okay, good.” Selena scrunched her lips. “Your car or mine?” She smiled. “Your car. And then when everything settles, I’ll come back for mine. It’ll be so nice when we live just how we want, won’t it?”

Lisa started crying.

“Stop that.” Selena was upset. “That’s so idiotic. You’re so ungrateful.”

“Please don’t do this.” Lisa turned, wiping her eyes on the sofa.

“Sweetheart, don’t do this to yourself.” Selena perched on the edge of the sofa and ran her fingers through Lisa’s hair. “Everything’s going to be fine. We’re going to be so happy together.” Selena got up. “You need a tissue.” She laughed on her way to the bathroom. “Just like a child.”
