Shanda Went to See a Psychic
(But don’t tell anyone!)
Shanda went to see a psychic. She didn’t tell her friends because she didn’t want to be judged. She actually didn’t believe in psychics herself but her life seemed to be going nowhere and she was desperate for some advice. There was obviously something in her life that she was not seeing that was causing the stalemate in her life situation; something that was blocking all her dreams from coming true.
It was her first time ever consulting a psychic and she was a little nervous. But she was also somewhat defiant. It was like she was daring the psychic to give her the perfect answer.
The psychic had closed his eyes and was breathing deeply. Shanda rolled her eyes but the psychic could not “see” that.
The psychic was wearing a thick turtleneck sweater which Shanda thought odd considering that it was May. Looking around the small office she saw shelves full of crystals, books, Buddha statues, goddess statues, small gongs, candles, and on one shelf there was a lone baseball. WTF? she thought.
Her eyes were drawn back to the psychic just as he opened his eyes. He took a very deep breath and exhalation then ran the fingers of his right hand through his bushy beard. Then he clasped his hands together and put them on the table.
“Shaylene, what I see is…”
“It’s Shanda.”
“What? Oh, I’m sorry. Shanda. Shanda, what I see is two large bubbles floating around in your field.”
Seriously? thought Shanda.
“One of the bubbles is filled with skepticism and the other bubble is filled with all your hopes and dreams and desires — and you have plenty of them. Your skepticism bubble is filled with all your thoughts of disbelief. You don’t believe your goals are attainable. You don’t believe you deserve to get what you desire. You don’t believe that you are worthy and deserving and skilled enough or smart enough or lucky enough to get what you deserve. You fill this bubble constantly with your negative thoughts just as you fill your desires bubble with your dreams.”
“The problem is that you feed both of these bubbles with your energy and thoughts and feelings and both bubbles are just as intense and strong as each other. Therefore they cancel each other out and you are left with nothing.”
Shanda’s lower jaw dropped ever so slightly leaving her mouth slightly opened.
“The average human has between 50,000 and 75,000 thoughts every day. We are constantly thinking. What I lovingly suggest you do is from time to time through your day step back away from yourself and observe your thinking. Just watch the thoughts go round and round in your head. Observe which thoughts are feeding which bubble.”
“Doing this regularly you will become more mindful of your thoughts and which of your bubbles you are feeding. Also notice how your thoughts make you feel.” (He strongly emphasized this.) “How each thought makes you feel will help indicate which bubble you’re feeding. All thoughts come with energy that triggers emotions and feelings. If a thought makes you feel bad then you know it is feeding your skepticism bubble. If it makes you feel good then it is feeding your desires bubble.”
“The important thing is to notice your thoughts and feelings. This will help you to direct your thoughts and feelings toward your desires bubble. Your skepticism bubble will then shrink as your desires bubble expands, gaining power and energy. No longer being canceled out by your skepticism bubble your desires bubble will grow and provide the energy for your desires to come about.”
That’s a hundred bucks I’ll never see again, thought Shanda as she left the psychic’s office. She looked around the street to make sure no one she knew saw her come out of the office.
Shanda then drove to her favorite watering hole to have some beers with her friends. She never mentioned to any of them that she had just been to see a psychic.
That night Shanda dreamed about bubbles.
The next morning she could not stop thinking about what the psychic had said, in fact she could not stop thinking about it for weeks. Slowly, she began implementing the psychic’s advice. Her desires bubble began to grow and her skepticism bubble began to shrink. Over time her life situation began to change.
The one thing that did not change is that she never told anyone that she had gone to see a psychic — at least not until many years later when she wrote a memoir about her very successful life.
