“Thorne, now!” Ella’s voice cut through the chaos. Insidious shadows enveloped them, the commander’s malice a tangible force.

“Got it,” Thorne replied, his arrow finding its mark with a sickening thud. But the victory was short-lived.

Cade’s laugh, bitter and pained, pierced the night. “He’s got my arm!” His voice was a mix of disbelief and defiance, the storm in his eyes wilder than ever.

Ella’s hands trembled as she knelt beside him, her whispers not to the earth, but to her friend. “Stay with us, Cade.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” he joked weakly; a tear hit his face.
