Chapter 3: Shadows and Echoes
When Arthur stepped into the precinct, he sensed an air of circumspection — an unspoken strain lurking in the undercurrents of hushed conversations and side glances. He locked eyes briefly with Sergeant Davies, who turned away, immersed in a phone call that seemed overtly grave.
“Arthur, the Chief wants to see you. Pronto,” announced Jenna, the liaison officer, her voice tinged with a caution Arthur couldn’t ignore.
The Chief’s office was suffused with the smell of Cuban cigars — a scent that lingered like a constant in a world of variables.
“Have a seat, Arthur,” Chief Donovan gestured to the chair opposite his massive oak desk, riddled with coffee stains and paperwork that spanned decades.
Arthur obliged, noting the subtle tension in the room. Donovan lit a cigar and spoke, his voice a gravelly timbre, “The Mayor’s on my back, Arthur. There’s public outcry, media frenzy. They want answers, and they want them now.”
“Sir, I’m doing my best. This murderer is not your run-of-the-mill criminal. The crime scenes are meticulously planned, each clue a deliberate — “
“A deliberate what? A deliberate effort to implicate you?” The Chief cut him off, pulling out an evidence bag. Inside was a silver pocket watch, identical to Arthur’s family heirloom — a watch that had gone missing from his locker weeks ago.
Arthur’s heart sank. How did this watch, a Reinhart family relic, end up as part of his case?
“That watch was found at the scene of the second murder. Explain that, Arthur.”
Arthur clenched his jaw. “I can’t, sir. But someone is framing me.”
The Chief sighed, stubbing out his cigar. “Arthur, I’ve known you for years. I don’t want to believe it’s you, but you have to understand my position. I’m taking you off the case.”
“Sir, you can’t. I’m the closest — “
“No arguments. I’m also obliged to report this to Internal Affairs. You’re on administrative leave, effective immediately.”
Fury and frustration boiled within Arthur as he left the station. The wind was colder now, each gust a jab at his predicament. Could it be that his colleagues, his friends, believed him capable of such horrors?
It was then that he caught his reflection in a shop window — yet something was amiss. His reflection had a smirk, an eerie self-assurance.
“Who are you?” he muttered, staring at his reflection.
“And who are you?” The reflection seemed to mouth back.
Chilled to his bones, Arthur hurried away, his mind spiralling into an abyss of questions and dreads.
That evening, he sat in his study, contemplating his next move. The room was cluttered with books on criminal psychology, forensics, and now, added to the collection, texts on parallel universes and occult practices.
His phone buzzed, snapping him out of his contemplation. An anonymous text read: “Meet me at Greenwood Cemetery, midnight. I have information you’ll want to see.”
A trap? Possibly. But Arthur felt it was a risk he had to take — a last bid to clear his name.
As the clock struck midnight, Arthur stepped into the eerie silence of Greenwood Cemetery. A figure emerged from the shadows — a familiar face, but one he couldn’t quite place.
“Detective Reinhart,” the figure whispered, “prepare yourself. Your life is about to be upended in ways you can’t begin to fathom.”
