The First Fall Leaf: Detective Arthur’s Haunting Pursuit | Mirror Murders — Chapter 1
Dive into the twisted realm of Mirror Murders as Detective Arthur Reinhart investigates a chilling murder spree with inexplicable connections to his own life.

Chapter 1: The First Fall Leaf
The October air held a penetrating chill, laced with an aroma of wet leaves and impending doom. Detective Arthur Reinhart tugged his collar higher, his piercing blue eyes scanning the grotesque crime scene. His salt-and-pepper hair betrayed the weight of years and cases that had wrung him dry of any youthful optimism.
The victim lay sprawled beneath a splintering oak tree; its leaves tinged with the early colours of autumn. A mirror shard jutted out from the victim’s throat, its reflective surface stained with crimson.
A younger officer, Timothy, shifted uncomfortably. “It’s monstrous, isn’t it?”
Arthur’s eyes never left the mirror shard. “That’s the word.”
Grimacing, he thought of his children — now living across the country with their mother, his ex-wife. Moments like this reminded him why he’d signed up for the force: to protect, to seek justice. But that sentiment now bore the taint of irony, marred by bureaucratic hurdles and the darkness that enveloped his professional life.
“Any witnesses?” Arthur asked, breaking his reverie.
“No, sir. It’s like the perpetrator vanished into thin air.”
Arthur sighed, taking in the crime scene once more before departing. But as he turned to leave, his eyes caught the reflection in the mirror shard. For a fleeting moment, his own face looked back at him — colder, malevolent, mocking. Arthur blinked, and his reflection returned to normal. A shiver coursed down his spine.
Arthur’s office was a sanctuary of organised chaos, filled with cold coffee mugs and files that each represented a spectre of his past. As he studied the clues from the crime scene, a tinge of anxiety nagged at him. This murder didn’t just unsettle him; it clawed at something deeper, darker.
The phone buzzed. It was a message from an unknown number, showing a photo of a mirror similar to the one at the crime scene. Written beneath it were the words, “How does it feel to look into the abyss, Arthur?”
His blood ran cold. Who would play such a sadistic game? He replied, demanding to know the sender’s identity, but received no answer.
Arthur’s thoughts ricocheted between rational explanations and the undeniable dread that the crime was not just a random act of violence but a sinister tapestry intricately woven into the fabric of his life. Every logical bone in his body revolted against the idea, but the pit in his stomach deepened.
He opened his drawer, revealing an old photograph of his family, their smiles a grim reminder of happier times. The realization hit him like a freight train: whoever was behind this was targeting him personally, and time was running out.
Arthur steeled himself, donning his coat and locking his office. His reflection in the window showed him the man he’d become: hardened, scarred but not defeated. Not yet.
But as he stared into his own eyes, his reflection smirked.
The night crept on, shadows dancing in the corners of Arthur’s mind. He knew he was on the precipice of something terrifying, a gateway to an abyss he might never escape. But he had no choice. He would delve into the darkness, chase the phantoms that taunted him, and come face-to-face with whatever — or whoever — lay on the other side.
As he pondered what his next move should be, another message arrived. This time, it was a location.
The game was afoot.
