Seven Tips for a Happier Life
Everyone has to find their own way back on the road to happiness
Some people feel dissatisfied with life. Not only were they not born with a silver spoon in their mouth, but they also feel helpless and depressed in the face of everyday events. If you’re ready to shake off the doom and gloom, these seven tips might open your eyes to a happier life.
Count your blessings
Whenever you feel dissatisfied with your life, think of all the things you have: a place to live, food in the kitchen, clothes in your wardrobe, family, friends, pets, a job, not to mention your health. Even if some of these things are lacking, or your health isn’t what it should be, there are always others who are worse off.
Be positive
When you think of a particular task — whether at home, at work, or in competitive sports — you should push negative thoughts aside. Think along the lines of “I can and I will.” You stand a better chance of succeeding if you believe in yourself. If something works out, it will give you confidence; if it doesn’t, then there’s always next time.
Start exercising
If you’re feeling stressed or sluggish, it’s time to exercise. Go for a walk or a run, swim a few laps or have fun with a ball. Whether it’s basketball, tennis or bowling, any exercise releases endorphins, known as “feel-good” hormones. If none of these options appeal to you, then maybe you could put on some music, turn up the volume and swing to the beat.
Stress management
No matter how hectic your lifestyle, you need to sit back and relax now and then. Some people like nothing better than to put up their feet and read a book; others find that drawing, painting or coloring takes their mind off their troubles. If a subtle approach isn’t your style, then how about joining a martial arts class, a boxing course, or getting a punching bag? These are excellent ways of dealing with frustrations.
Seek help
If you feel you can’t handle a particular situation anymore, then talk to your doctor. Depending on what it is that’s bothering you, a doctor might be able to help or refer you to someone. If you don’t fancy the idea of seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist, there are therapy groups for just about every problem. You’re never alone.
Spoil yourself
After a hard week, a demanding task, or for no reason at all, do something for yourself. Get that piece of jewelry you had your eye on, pick up the latest book of your favorite author, or get that cupcake. You don’t always have to be sensible or responsible; sometimes you have to take a chance and give in to temptation.
Let go
If the cause of your unhappiness is a past mistake you made but can’t rectify, it’s time to stop beating yourself up about it. You can’t go back and change anything. If you get plagued by “I should have” or “I could have,” resolutely state “Enough!” Say it out loud and as often as you have to; eventually, the negativity will disappear.
Remember that nobody is happy all the time. Annoying, frustrating, even infuriating things happen every day. Instead of letting negativity influence your life, find a constructive way to deal with such feelings. That might be easier for some than for others, but ultimately, everyone has to find their own way back on the road to happiness.
