Jackson, Mississippi has enough problems right now with high rates of Covid and their water system being outdated. And now one lone arsonist runs around the city setting seven fires to buildings including two churches.

In the photos above Elder Lloyd Caston, 73, surveys the remains of Epiphany Lutheran Church, one of the oldest predominately Black churches in Mississippi, near midtown Jackson after fire destroyed their building. Another church was set ablaze, along with Jackson State University’s baseball practice field along its fences.

No injuries were reported but the church that was burned to the ground lost everything. It was 85 years old and renovations has just been completed in March. So one can imagine the shock of this lost, just having started a new chapter in this landmark church and have that continued history destroyed in an instance.

Even though the lone suspect, Devin McLaurin, has been arrested in connection with these fires across Mississippi’s capital is nevertheless devastating. Jackson, Mississippi a predominantly African American community with a African American mayor who appears to be fighting for all the needs of the residents of Jackson, now has to deal with one of their own who is suspected of setting these fires across Jackson, Mississippi.

With this arrest, the damage is done and has interrupted many lives in one manner or another. One person mental instability has interrupted lives of others in a very negative manner. The sad part about this, the suspect may or may not know personally the lives or institutions he has affected in such a horrific manner.

Thus far, no motivation behind these fires have been obtained. The suspect is being charged with felony malicious mischief and may face additional charges. Now, this suspect may find himself a ward of the state’s prison system and join the many that are imprisoned according to their own doings and the design of a penal system that seek out his type for profit in the penal system. McLaurin has opened that door where his life may no longer be his own if and when found guilty.

In conclusion, the bright side of this situation is that the fires were started around the same time, 2:45 a.m. and six of the seven fires were extinguished by 6 a.m. and no lives were lost. According to the news, the damage could have been worse without due diligence. Jackson now can continue moving forward for all its residents.
