Seriously? Over 2k claps for what amounts to a fart on a page?

Guys, I’m so confused. After three-plus years, here, I still don’t understand how some stories that say absolutely nada get so much attention.
Case in point: The other day, I read a short piece that was so innocuous, I can’t even remember what it was about. It wasn’t posted in this fine publication, but rather, on the writer’s home page. I believe it’s someone I read on occasion, or I wouldn’t have bothered. Plus, it was in my feed, where I rarely see writers who I follow religiously. That’s a whole other story.
I read it and thought, “What the hell was that?”
Then, I was stunned to see that this little squirt in the ether received over 2k claps! By now, the number is probably far greater.
I don’t get it. Someone, explain, please.
