Self-Awareness Is The First Step To Spiritual-Awareness

Setting the foundation for a stronger spiritual connection.

There is a beautiful story in Hindu mythology about Lord Ganesha (the elephant-headed god) and his brother Karthikeya.

One day the two brothers decided that they should race each other three times around the world. Whoever finishes first gets bragging rights.

When the time was set, Karthikeya got onto his vehicle of choice: a peacock. He flew the peacock with such grace and velocity!

He flew around the world once — around continents and the mountains. He went around twice — crossing the seven seas and remote islands. He went around the third time — making sure to cross the ever frozen poles of the planet.

All this while, Lord Ganesha was just watching his brother. What was his plan?

When he saw Karthikeya returning, Lord Ganesha stood up with gusto, went to his parents and walked around them in circles: Once! Twice! and a third time before his brother landed the peacock and declared that he had won!

Karthikeya couldn’t believe his eyes! He asked his brother to explain.

Lord Ganesha said: “You went around THE world. I went around MY world.”

When most people think about spirituality, they think about everything outside their bodies and minds. They think spirituality begins on the outside by thinking about the cosmos and contemplating the poetic meaning of life.

Some relate being spiritual to putting on sacred robes and lighting sweet-smelling incense. They work hard at emptying their minds and cleansing their bodies in an effort to have a so-called “clean-slate” in an effort to reach the spiritual awareness they were promised.

Spiritual awareness is not an external process.

Like Lord Ganesha, spiritual awareness is about YOUR world; not THE world.

To be spiritually aware and awake, you have to be self-aware.

Aware about what’s holding you back, so you can pray for strength. Aware of your wellbeing, so you can pray for healing. Aware of your desires, so you can pray for light on your path. Aware of your mistakes, so you can pray for forgiveness.

Self-awareness becomes the foundation.

When you know YOUR world, you can make sense of THE world.

Understanding yourself and your world requires a bit of daily work. To get some help on how to raise your self-awareness, read my short article from last month where I give 5 tips on understanding more about yourself.

Using the 5 tips listed in that article, you can begin to slowly set up a foundation of self-awareness. You will notice the benefits in your daily life and productivity. You will feel more connected to the world which will raise your spirituality to new levels.

I and the writers of this publication would love to hear your stories of spiritual awakening as a result of raising your self-awareness.
