Expand Your Mind By Reading In The Morning

Using peace and quiet for personal growth

Waking up at 5:00 AM is all the rage these days.

There are articles and books that detail why it is important to become an early riser, and quite a lot of them do an amazing job of explaining the benefits of seeing the sunrise. Most even go through the gory details of listing out the things to do to maximize the rest of your day.

There are days when I am truly motivated by these writeups. However, most days, I am at a loss of ideas on what to do once I am up. If you don’t know what to do, the early rising habit won’t last.

Here is my ONE single tip that helped me maximize my morning without all the rah-rah motivation: R E A D

Use the early morning peace and quiet to your personal growth advantage.

Why read?

Read to be better at things you want to be better at. Read to be better at things you should be better at. Read to be better at things you need to be better at.

Here are some ideas on getting started. Grab your morning coffee and join me on a personal growth journey.

  • Spiritual reading. For a lot of folks, this is a good start. It allows them to ease into the meditative state that spiritual reading puts the mind into.
  • Relationship reading. Everyone should read something that teaches how to interact in relationships — at home and outside. People skills are the soft skills that make the most difference even in our professional lives.
  • Body language reading. These books help in situations when you don’t know the people you are interacting with. Body language clues help in understanding what the other person is feeling.
  • Personal growth reading. Lately, there have been some very popular books that help you create successful habits and attitudes. Having the right habits and attitudes can be the difference between a consistently upward growth curve, and wondering years later — what happened!
  • Career reading. What do you need to learn to do better in your career? Dig out a book that can teach you skills/knowledge so you can walk into work with more confidence that the day before.
  • Personal finance reading. We all need a helping hand when it comes to at least one aspect of our money. How to manage it? How to grow it? How to protect it? How to use it? How to give it away?
