Secret to country star’s sudden success at 40? Quitting alcohol
I’m now 42 years old, and I feel that I’m just now turning my life into something I can be proud of.
Yes, I had a lot going for me before.
I actually had a pretty decent journalism career, and I’ve always prided myself on being a caring, dedicated husband and father.
But, at my core, I also always knew that I wasn’t reaching anything close to my potential.
My dream had always been to build a business and work for myself.
I’d make attempts at that, sure.
But ultimately those projects would die on the table because I prioritized wasting my time and energy on drinking alcohol every night instead.
That would, in turn, mess up my sleep, drain my vitality, throw my brain’s reward system all out of whack, and leave me with little motivation to do anything but life’s most basic tasks the next day.
Goodbye entrepreneurial dreams.

It’s not over
It’s tempting to think it’s all over by the time you reach your early 40s.
We live in a society that idolizes youth.
But it’s not. I’m proof of that.
In my first year after quitting alcohol, I earned multiple five figures in business income and I can feel the momentum building.
I’m finally proud of myself. I finally got back the priceless gift alcohol stole from me: optimism.
All this comes to mind after reading an article this week about a country music artist who has finally become something of a rising star at around the same age I am.
Her secret?
She quit alcohol.
This changes everything
To be sure, Ashley McBryde had some notable success earlier in her career.
But over a matter of months, she’s released two popular albums, garnered a Grammy award, notched three CMA nominations, and has been granted membership in the prestigious Grand Ole Opry.
Not bad for a 40-year-old in a young person’s game!
I like how she described the decision to quit alcohol in an interview with People Magazine earlier this month:
“It’s sort of like I can hear the universe saying, ‘Kid, you were just in your own way.’”
It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you stop self-sabotaging, isn’t it?

Meet the real you
McBryde quit alcohol two months before I did, in June 2022, but decided to keep it quiet in order to prevent any public negativity from creeping in.
She explained:
“I decided that I wasn’t gonna talk about it at all until at least a year because what I didn’t need was people on social media being like, ‘Ashley McBryde swears off alcohol!’ All people are gonna do is just wait for you to screw up, and that’s really annoying.
“I did it for me. I didn’t do it for social media.”
That she finally had to address it speaks to the many other benefits of quitting alcohol, too.
She decided to reveal her decision because so many people were asking what her secret was to suddenly looking fitter, younger, and less haggard while her energy and voice on stage took off.
The real payoff, however — and one that I received as well — is that, as McBryde aptly puts it, she finally met herself.
Here’s what she said about turning 40 amidst all these changes:
“I was worried about it a little bit, but it feels like a nice rite of passage. If this were an animated film, this is where they place the crown on my head, where I’m just like … I am now me.
“And I think that all has to do with making all the decisions I’ve been making, making all the changes I’ve been making, and recognizing, that’s who I am. I’m halfway to 80, and I just met me.”
Wouldn’t you love to meet the real you?
I think you’d really be impressed!
