Summary

A team of researchers has identified AX149 as a potential exoplanet for human habitation, but its lack of color raises concerns about its suitability.

Abstract

The article discusses the discovery of AX149, an exoplanet identified by a team of researchers, including the narrator, Josh, and Brad, after a decade-long search for a planet that could replace Earth. The planet seemingly meets all critical requirements for human life, such as a thick atmosphere, oxygen, biodiversity, and a suitable star. However, the team is hesitant to declare AX149 as the new home for humanity due to its monochromatic landscape, which lacks color and could impact the quality of life for future generations.

Opinions

  • The team initially believes AX149 to be the best candidate for human colonization due to its Earth-like characteristics.
  • The absence of color on AX149 is considered a significant issue, potentially affecting the psychological well-being of inhabitants.
  • The leader of the team, after initially underestimating the importance of color, is prompted to reconsider the significance of a colorful environment for human habitation.

Searching for an Exoplanet

To replace earth

When I entered my office at 8 am, Josh and Brad were waiting for me. They were part of my team searching for an exoplanet to replace the earth. After a ten-year-long search, we identified fifteen potential planets and then short-listed AX149 as the best one for humans to live on. Josh and Brad spent seven days at AX149 to do the final evaluation and came back yesterday.

I greeted them with a big smile and jumped to the topic. “Are we ready to announce to the world that AX149 meets all our requirements?”

Josh replied, “It certainly has everything we need, sir. It has a thick atmosphere, plenty of oxygen, plants, animals, lot of water, and a star at the perfect distance.” He paused and then continued, “But we have one major concern, sir.”

“What’s that?”

“The planet has no color, sir. Everything we saw there — soil, plants, trees, mountains, and animals — all appeared in either black or white. It was like watching a B&W movie.”

I didn’t expect it. After a few seconds, I asked. “Hmm…is that a big deal?”

“Sir, do you want your kids to grow up in a world devoid of color?”
