Sea Levels are Rising and So Are My Questions

I just caught the latest episode of Our Planet 2, and it left me awash with worry about the future of our planet.

As I watched footage of Antarctica’s massive glaciers rapidly shedding icebergs, a tidal wave of climate anxiety crashed over me.

The cold, hard facts are these:

Antarctica is losing over 150 billion tons of ice every year. Sea levels are steadily rising. Global temperatures continue to climb. And humanity’s actions have landed us on this rapidly-heating trajectory.

Yet the narrator kept a determinedly upbeat tone.

“Nature is resilient!”

he insisted, while sweeping footage showed endangered species barely clinging to existence.

But let’s get real here — the situation is dire.

No amount of optimistic spin can make these harsh truths more palatable.

So where does this leave us? Adrift on a sinking ship, while the band obstinately plays on? Clinging to the wreckage of a sustainable future while the waters rise around us? I wish I could say otherwise.

The reality is stark — we are already living with the serious consequences of climate change, and far greater challenges lie ahead.

Can my shorter showers and composting even make a dent in issues of this magnitude? Honestly, let’s not pretend individual actions will be enough to turn back the tide on the systemic changes needed.

I don’t have solutions here, only solemn concern.

Because the facts speak for themselves — Antarctica is melting, seas are rising, and there is no going back from here. I take no pleasure in saying any of this.

But with the water already around our ankles, there seems little reason left for optimism.

All I know is we cannot afford willful ignorance or blind hope in the face of this unfolding catastrophe. The time has come to open our eyes, and face what lies ahead, as best as we’re able.
