Saturn Series: Twelfth House or Pisces — The Need for Compassion

The influence of transit or natal Saturn through the signs and houses

Welcome to the last article in this series on Saturn in astrology.

This series explores how Saturn might show up in your life when it transits the 12th House or Pisces, or if you have this placement in your birth chart.

Everyone is experiencing this now

As of writing this article in the last few days of December 2023, Saturn is transiting the first degrees of Pisces. Therefore, if you are reading this before 14 February 2026, except between 25 May 2025 — and 31 August 2025, whether or not you have these placements in your birth chart you are experiencing this energy now.

Wherever Saturn travels there is effectively a stripping back of that area of life (House) and what it affects (sign). Only what is meant to stay will stay, and eventually, there will be a rebuilding of foundations that are stronger than the old ones.

I say ‘eventually’ because firstly, in the earlier stages of the transit, you see unstable and weak structures crumble. This facilitates the necessary breakdown of what will no longer serve you in the future.

Around the middle of the transit is where we see clearly what wasn’t working before and what we could do to form stronger structures that will serve us for the envisioned future. In the later part of the transit, we get to work making manifest those ideas.

Saturn in the twelfth House or Pisces by transit or birth

The 12th House is the domain of the hidden and the subconscious. In a birth chart, it is the part of ourselves that takes the most work to discover.

Those with 12th placements will usually become more familiar with this darker area of life as they will experience it more. It is a House associated with karma, and people with placements here may be advanced souls.

To master such placements requires developing an awareness of the part/s of yourself that reside here. For example, having your sun sign in the 12th asks you to search for your triggers, feel your pain, and go deep into yourself to heal psychological and emotional wounds so that you may also serve others.

Pisces is the mutable water sign, Neptune’s domain of illusion and disillusion, dreams and nightmares.

Every sign has two sides, and with Pisces, this is the highest level of compassion and selflessness and the most soulless indifference and selfishness.

It can manifest in a very literal of its sign. For example, crises involving water; the lack of it, toxicity, or too much. I am thinking now of the people in Gaza who are currently struggling to survive due to oppression and a lack of basic resources, including water, due to inhumane treatment by the Israeli Government.

People with natal Saturn in the 12th or Pisces can become incredibly selfless, compassionate healers with a great understanding of peoples’ deep conditioning and motivations.

For those experiencing a Saturn in the 12th House or Pisces transit, all of us until late May 2025, this transit provides an opportunity to see each other more clearly and to develop more compassion.

Famous Example

Barack Obama has Saturn in the 12th House in Capricorn.

Obama was the 44th president of the United States. According to the information page about him on the White House website, Obama held the philosophy that a big part of life should be about caring for others.

His story is the American story — values from the heartland, a middle-class upbringing in a strong family, hard work and education as the means of getting ahead, and the conviction that a life so blessed should be lived in service to others.

Before being elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, Obama worked to improve the lives of people on the South Side of Chicago who had been affected by steel mill closures, and following law school, specialised in civil rights at a small firm.

He was the first African-American US president and the fourth to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, in 2009. He spoke at the 50th anniversary of the five-day Selma to Montgomery civil rights march.

The march was led by Martin Luther King in March 1965 which resulted in President Lyndon B Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in August that year, giving African-Americans the right to vote.

In Obama’s Farewell Address on 10 January 2017, his final speech as president, he demonstrated a sentiment of Saturn in the 12th House, a belief in the interdependence of all people on each other.

“… democracy does require a basic sense of solidarity — the idea that for all our outward differences, we’re all in this together; that we rise or fall as one.”
