Santa From the Grove in L.A.
A grand outdoor mall with plenty of surprises

The place is called The Grove, an outdoor shopping mall in Los Angeles. It is my favorite spot to grab lunch or a cup of coffee for my favorite pastime — people-watching. One of my favorite people, Santa, is flying over The Cheesecake Factory on his way to his workshop in the mall.

A tall, decorated Christmas tree is something to behold. There may not be snow, and it may be sunny and warm in Southern California, but if you have a Christmas tree and Santa, you’ve got the holiday spirit.

I wanted to sit on Santa’s lap, but because I was a senior citizen, they said — “Only children can sit on Santa’s lap.”

But they said it nicely and invited me in anyway. I just wanted to meet Elf, honestly. I‘ve seen Santa a zillion times before. But I’ve never met Elf in person.

Santa was a real gentleman and greeted me with a wave. He said that Elf was no longer an employee of his, was married, and was living in Toluca Lake, where he delivers mail for the United States Post Office. Although he still wears his elf suit on occasion.

I asked Santa for a Rolls, but he gave me a Mazda3.

This is the only mall I’ve been to that has a trolley. And like everything in L.A., there are advertisements for movies.

Apple’s logo is decorated for Christmas. The Grove has the biggest Apple store I’ve seen. It even has trees inside.

Santa is flying over a giant Menorah. He is a man of all cultures, faiths, and ethnicities and does not neglect our Jewish friends. This mall, like Santa, is inclusive.
I was pleasantly surprised by a few passionate orthodox Jewish teens who approached me in an outdoor restaurant and asked if I wanted to wear a yarmulke, prayer shawl (a tallit), and a tefillin to get closer to God. I respectfully declined since I was in the middle of a delicious Cobb salad. My religious education can wait till after I have a full stomach.

Spreading cheer, this perpetual octogenarian flies over California and never tires of waving and saying ho-ho-ho. Bored at his workshop, Santa got on his gift-laden sleigh and took to the sky, continuing his wild trek across California. He flies over the Hollywood sign, Disneyland, and the Getty on the hill. Next stops include Lompoc, Needles, Burbank, Barstow, Bakersfield, Temecula, and San Bernadino. He might not stop in Orange County if his bag of presents runs low.
