The Thrill from My Childhood Passion

One of the most exciting parts of my childhood was rollerblading. My love for it began when my school hosted a fundraiser at the local roller rink. Some students fell and got back up right away; others zipped around the track. Parents and teachers joined in, helping children when they got hurt. I wasn’t good at many things, but I caught onto rollerblading fairly quickly.

I continued to rollerblade around my neighborhood and at parks in elementary school. After my balance improved enough to jump over curbs, I wanted more of a challenge.

One day, my mom took me and my siblings to a YMCA that had a skatepark. The “older kids” flying off ramps on their rollerblades and skateboards inspired me. Their helmets and protective gear were badass! I wanted to be like them!

In the fall of seventh grade, my mom signed me up for rollerblading lessons at the YMCA. The class consisted of maybe five children between the ages of 8 and 14. We were all at different levels. The skate coaches were an older gentleman and a 24-year-old man. They both did a great job assisting all the students. I learned how to jump off the half pipe. My 24-year-old skating coach encouraged me to keep practicing outside of class. I continued working with him the following year.

During my rollerblading days at the YMCA, I went to three or four other skate parks. Some of the ramps were huge! So my mom bought me better protective gear. I continued to zip down the streets with some of my friends and my siblings. My passion for rollerblading lasted until the middle of high school.

Since then, I stopped rollerblading. School and Dance Dance Revolution became my main interests. In college, I attempted to rollerblade again. But I got into a rollerblading accident. After that, I became afraid to continue rollerblading. So I put more of my energy into creative hobbies such as writing and coloring. Those passions enrich my life right now.
