The usual sad trinity put Rocky on the dark path: high school, religion, and betrayal.
- Rocky killed his high-school crush because she rejected him. The note he left on her body is heart-wrenching, “honey, you’d still be alive if you’d been nicer in high school.”
- Fleeing the police and hiding in a bush with a stranger under an Aurora Borealis, Rocky lost his religion.
- And finally, Rocky betrayed his best friend, the only one who had helped him after his time in a juvenile ward. Rocky couldn’t accept his love and forgiveness, so he rejected him.
It was the end of an era for Rocky. He left his natal Missanabie and went to Fishtrap Lake, living alone for a few years in Northern Ontario. Rocky never talked about it, but some say he went there searching for redemption.

On December 15, 2017, Rocky connected his computer to the internet for the first time in three years. He checked his bitcoin accounts and realized the $1,000 of bitcoins he had bought in 2011 was worth $19 million.
He was already crazy and murderous.
Now he was rich.
In a matter of a week, he became a sex maniac.
