Rocking Our Way to Fun?

Everything Fun’s July-August Writing Prompt

Since starting this publication earlier this year, I’ve enjoyed reading about how other people experience fun. Some people write about spontaneous moments when fun unfolds unexpectedly and often hysterically. Other people write about enjoyable experiences that require planning. While we can’t always plan for fun, I believe certain things can enable it to occur more easily.

Music is one of the best fun lubricants. Many songs have a transcendent quality — allowing us to move from one mental state to another. For example, when I hear the opening notes to Cumbria Sobre El Mar, I am transported to a high-vibe groovy headspace that borders on bliss — all within seconds. It’s the least expensive therapy I’ve ever encountered.

The other editors of this fun-loving pub, Spyder Darling and Patrick Parker, share my passion for music. Perhaps that’s why they are highly accomplished musicians. Didn’t know they rocked? Well, here is a bit about each of us:

Spyder Darling says he likes playing both kinds of music: rock and roll. Since the early ’80s, he has played in a number of bands and at such notable venues as CBGB in NYC, the Whisky a Go Go in LA and a few high-class dives in between. Patrick Parker, our newest brilliant editor at Everything Fun, found his passion for music in his 20s while playing the pipe organ in churches and cathedrals around the U.S. and Europe. He played the organs that Bach, Liszt, Mendelssohn, and others he knew and wrote music for, as well as the ones in Notre Dame in Paris and St. John the Divine in NYC. Now he writes and makes videos to help people become who they really are (a concept inspired by Carl Gustav Jung). You can read and watch Patrick here: www.patrickaaronparker.com and www.youtube.com/patrickparker

I (Hollie) am a guitar-playing fool who tinkers with other instruments. I grew up playing for mostly all-female heavy metal, thrash, punk, and rap bands in my 20s, then expanded to singer/songwriter and meditation music writer as I’ve gotten older. Although I didn’t travel with my music as far as Spyder or Patrick, I did get to play throughout a handful of states in the U.S. — and I had a blast doing it.

As you can see, we LOVE music! That’s why we want to hear your stories about the subject. Please, tell us what rocks your world.

About This Prompt

Think back to the many great times you’ve had in your life. Did music play a part in the fun? Was it playing in the background at the festive barbeque you attended? Do you remember the tunes of a special occasion, like a wedding, holiday, or birthday party? Were any of your favorite memories from a concert you attended? Have you ever had an exhilarating night out with the guys or ladies that involved jamming in the vehicle as you headed out? What other fun things have you done that involved music?

Please write about any aspect of your musical experience — the story, the song or songs, what the experience meant to you, or anything related to fun and music. We want to hear about it because we’re crazy about music!
