Summary

The web content presents a reflective poem on the nature of friendships, inspired by a poetry prompt, with an analogy to yogurt culture, and expresses gratitude towards the tagger, Lucy Dan 蛋小姐.

Abstract

The article titled "Rock Solid" features a poem that uses the metaphor of a thriving support system to describe the enduring and sweet nature of true friendships, while also acknowledging the transient nature of some relationships that sour over time or come with an expiry date. The piece is a response to a poetry prompt inspired by Dennett and includes a photograph by Charlotte May. The author, Fatima Imam, thanks Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 for involving her in the prompt. Additionally, the article explains the concept of yogurt culture as an accompanying metaphor, detailing how a blend of bacteria in a yogurt starter converts lactose to lactic acid, enhancing the yogurt's shelf life and texture, paralleling the way friendships can shape and preserve aspects of our lives.

Opinions

  • The author values true friendships as a source of therapeutic support and learning.
  • Some friendships, despite initially seeming promising, are not meant to last and are likened to "flashy" relationships with an expiry date.
  • The author expresses a deep appreciation for the friendships that have remained, considering them essential for maintaining sanity.
  • The metaphor of yogurt culture is used to illustrate how the unique blend of bacteria in friendships can influence the 'flavour' and 'thickness' of the relationship, suggesting that each friendship has its own distinctive impact on one's life.

Poetry Prompt inspired by Dennett

True friendships remain fresh in all seasons. Teaching valuable lessons and adding sweetness into life. Therapeutic and tenacious, always available as a thriving support system. Test of time made some friendships into rotten relationships. But they were never meant to be permanent. Treacherous circumstances turned some friendships sour. Flashy friendships come with an expiry date, so there were no regrets when they came to an end. Few friendships became accompanying culture*, tagging along when life took new directions.

Thank you, Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for tagging me in today’s prompt:

Friendships are my lifeline to maintain sanity ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ There are only a few solid friendships left now but there are more than enough. Thank you so much for thinking about me. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

*A yogurt starter also known as culture is a carefully balanced blend of bacteria that consume lactose. This blend of bacteria converts the lactose in milk to lactic acid, giving yogurt that classic, deliciously tangy taste. Lactic acid production lowers the pH of the milk, which allows yogurt to be stored longer and changes the protein structure, giving yogurt its texture. Each yogurt starter has a unique blend of bacteria, which produce different flavours and thicknesses. https://www.culturesforhealth.com/learn/yogurt/choosing-a-yogurt-starter-culture/
