Drabble STORY ARC #2: Seek and Avenge

Reunion of Rogues

Part of a ‘choose your own’ story — drabble edition

This is a ‘choose your own’ fiction story, “drabble edition”. You can check out Chapter 1 of this story, ‘The Burned Village’, or check the previous chapter: ‘Like a Rat, Departing’, by JF Danskin.

A double-drabble to cap off this branch of the story.

“I’m just here to rescue my people!” you cry.

The lizard folk hiss, nod, then race into the maze of cells. You follow. Soon, many prisoners are being freed, human, goblin, lizardfolk…

At last you find a gallery with human captives, and start to recognise some of the locals from your village. There’s Andy the fletcher! And Marylou, the village guard (thanks for nothing, Marylou!).

And then, your partner. You dash towards one another, embracing.

“How did you find me?” they ask.

“A lot of effort! I had help, though. Dara the elf, a ranger, a lizard warrior…”

“Cool! And where are those heroes now?”

“Well…” You shift uncomfortably, remembering the gladiatorial arena. “Enough about me. Where are the kids?”

It’s your partner’s turn to look shifty. “It was them or me! Those orcs have big appetites.”

Your eyes widen. “You didn’t…!”

“I had no choice!”

You hyperventilate for a moment, lost for words. In your moment of triumph, this was the last thing you expected.

Nearby, the villagers have gathered. Marylou taps you on the shoulder. “Look — thanks. We appreciate what you’ve done.”

“Uh… sure.”

“Now, let’s get out of here while we can. There’s a village to rebuild.”

The End

Didn’t expect a kinder ending after abandoning poor Dara, did you? 😅

If you changed your mind, you could always go back and shoot the gladiators instead!
