Researchers Asked Strangers For Casual Sex. Here’s What Happened.
Imagine going out on the street and asking people of the gender you are sexually attracted to if they would like to have sex with you.
It sounds like something straight out of a cringe-worthy pickup line handbook. But back in the late ’70s, researchers actually did just that.
They approached people of the opposite sex and asked them one of the following three questions:
- “Would you go out with me tonight?”
- “Would you come to my apartment tonight?”
… and the infamous “Would you go to bed with me tonight?”
Now, before you start thinking that this study was the work of a group of horny scientists, let me clarify that there was actually a serious research purpose behind it. The study aimed to investigate gender differences in attitudes toward casual sex.
The results that the researchers obtained were shocking and gave an obvious picture of the different sexual behavior of men and women regarding casual sex.
The Results
So, what were the results?
It turns out that men and women have vastly different attitudes toward casual sex.
Around 50% of both men and women agreed to go out with the person who made the proposition. However, the numbers diverged drastically when it came to the second question, “Would you come to my apartment tonight?”.
While 69% of men agreed to go to the proposer’s apartment, only 6% of women were willing to do the same.
But the biggest difference was seen with the third question, “Would you go to bed with me tonight?” A whopping 75% of men agreed to have sex with the proposer, while not a single woman did.
Now, before you start thinking that the women in the study were all frigid prudes, let’s consider the context. The study took place in a public setting, with complete strangers propositioning each other. In such a scenario, women may have been warier of potential danger or violence, whereas men may have been more confident in their ability to protect themselves.
Additionally, women may have been more concerned about the social implications of engaging in casual sex, as they may have feared being labeled as promiscuous or slutty.
This study, while conducted over 40 years ago, still has relevance today. The #MeToo movement and increased awareness around sexual assault and harassment have brought attention to the issue of consent and the importance of respecting boundaries.
While it’s perfectly fine to express interest in someone, it’s important to do so respectfully and consensually. Simply asking someone if they want to have sex with you is not only inappropriate, but it’s also illegal and can result in charges being filed against you.
In conclusion, the study from the late ’70s shows that men and women have vastly different attitudes toward casual sex.
While men may be more inclined to engage in casual sex with a stranger, women seem to be more cautious and concerned about the potential risks and consequences, which makes perfect sense from an evolutionary point of view.
It’s important to remember that every person is different, and it’s never okay to make assumptions about someone’s desires or boundaries. Respect and consent should always be the guiding principles in any sexual encounter.
