Reply to “That Our Writings May Fly Higher”
By the author Christopher Akinlade
I can’t promise to reciprocate with 100% of the authors who take an interest in my work by reading theirs as well. But if there were more time in the day that’s how I’d like to spend most of it. I don’t take it for granted to have access to the thoughts and ideas of my fellow authors. Especially for those who have been generous towards me with their own time and attention.
Christopher Akinlade has been on Medium for less time than I have. He’s been writing in English for less time than I have. And yet, with this story Christopher finally persuaded me to use a powerful tool.
I’ve heard of it before, but dropped it into the “sounds cool, I’ll check it out later” category of my mind.
That’s easy to do that when you’re hearing about dozens of tools from experts who have years of experience. I’m exposed to so many tools, tactics, and tricks, that there’s an overload. Almost everything gets dropped into that “later” category for me, these days.
Anyway, for a beginner to be raving about Hemmingway means that it can’t be that much trouble — and it isn’t! It’s as easy to use as Medium. Type the story in Hemmingway and presto! Copy/Paste into Medium. That’s it.
Hemmingway gives the same kind of feedback (or better) that we pay thousands of dollars for human teachers to give. And it does so for free. Instantly.
Twenty years of living in an academic bubble have formed me into the sort of writer who struggles to communicate simply. By instinct, I generally write at a 9th-grade level or higher. I struggle to get the complexity of my sentence structure down to the point where non-English speakers also have access.
Now that I have Medium I no longer have to wonder how many people click away from my work in frustration. I see it, and it’s depressing.
If you’ve struggled your way through my brutally difficult sentences before, you may notice a difference in this story. That’s because I’m using Hemmingway App right now.
Thanks for your life-changing writing advice, Christopher!
