Redefining the 9–5 Work Day
Creating the life you love as an entrepreneur

Weekends are a great time for adventures. It is the perfect time to recalibrate the body and mind. My dad always used to say, “Work hard/ play hard, but stay balanced.” That was some of the best advice I have received. My new friends in my condominium joke that I must live quite a lavish lifestyle to be out by the pool each day by approximately two in the afternoon. But I had a serious conversation with my new friend Deb yesterday. She joked, “Oh, cut out of work early, did you?” I quickly responded, “Well, kind of. I put in a ten-hour day; my hours look different than many.”
I have carefully crafted the second edition of my life, as I like to call it. I made major changes after becoming an “empty nester.” I moved from Ohio to Arizona, got much more disciplined in my writing and more consistent with publishing daily, and started living the life I dreamed of rather than fantasizing about it. It is never too late to reinvent your life.
As my dad advised, I work hard but stay balanced. I love the freedom of working from home. However, being my own boss and being an entrepreneur takes work. It comes with its own set of challenges. But I am ready to overcome the hurdles when I remain balanced in body and mind.
Work Hours
One perk of working from home is that I get to choose my hours. I was motivated to get outside and enjoy the gorgeous weather when I moved to Arizona. So, I now wake up each morning around four a.m. and work until one or two in the afternoon. Then I swim, soak up the sun, and live my best life surrounded by amazing, inspiring people.
Deb was shocked to hear I had already put in a ten-hour workday. She is retired and previously worked a traditional 9–5 job. She joked that she could never get up that early, but then, after looking up at the bright blue sky for a few seconds, said, “Come to think of it, I was awake at 4:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep. I should have just gotten up and been productive.”
Programming
I believe we are programmed as a society to think work means 9–5, pleasure means weekends, and holidays mean vacation destinations. I think that is all a crock of ****. Why are so many people letting others define how your life should be? Design the life you love; live the life you love. This is it, baby. This is all we have.
Final Thoughts
Moving to Arizona was far more than a move. It was a major life choice and change. I chose to reinvent my life. To stop living for everyone else and create the life I love daily. Because I intend to do so, I can now better serve others.
This choice is available to you each day. If you are not living the life you love, I am here to remind you it is always possible to reinvent yourself, add or delete characters, and, most importantly, step out of autopilot mode.

I was very touched by Shameem Anwar’s story about how our struggles exist for a reason and make us stronger.
