Summary

The web content discusses the balance between rationality and intuition, emphasizing that great thinkers and innovators like Einstein, Steve Jobs, and Jesus relied on intuition beyond pure rationality to achieve their breakthroughs.

Abstract

The article "Rationality vs Intuition" delves into the dichotomy between the rational mind and intuition, suggesting that while rationality is useful, it can lead to a confining labyrinth of known facts. It posits that true innovation and understanding, as demonstrated by historical figures such as Einstein, the founders of Apple, and Jesus, come from a place of intuitive wisdom. This wisdom is accessed by being still and receptive to the unknown, allowing for a connection with a higher source of knowledge and guidance. The piece quotes various figures, including Steve Jobs and Einstein himself, to support the idea that intuition, described as a "very powerful thing" and the "whisper of the soul," is crucial for great discoveries and transcends intellectual reasoning.

Opinions

  • The author believes that being entirely rational can lead to a form of madness, as it traps one in a maze of empirical facts without a way out.
  • Intuition is presented as a "vertical channel" that provides a way out of the rational labyrinth, leading to true understanding and innovation.
  • Einstein's theoretical breakthroughs are attributed to intuition rather than rational problem-solving, as he sought quiet and stillness to receive knowledge.
  • Jesus' teachings and actions are said to be guided by intuitive understanding of the "kingdom within," rather than solely rational thought.
  • Steve Jobs is quoted to emphasize the power of intuition over intellect, suggesting that it is a key factor in innovation and discovery.
  • The author encourages readers to be receptive to intuitive wisdom, which is characterized by peace and goodness, and serves one's highest motives.
  • The article cites G.K. Chesterton to illustrate that losing touch with everything except reason can be a form of insanity.

Rationality vs Intuition

Being 100% Rational Has Been Called Madness

Standing on the Edge of Unknowing —

Receiving Fresh Knowing — V6 #midjourneyai

If Einstein had used only his rational mind, he would never have developed the theories he is famous for. And Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak would never have developed Apple computers. And Jesus would never have taught about the kingdom within nor would he have only said and done what he saw the Father doing.

Rational mind has its place, but it deals with what is already known. It becomes a labyrinth for the empiricist with no way out. Being 100% rational has been called madness.

But thankfully there is a way out of that endless labyrinth of facts and that is through the vertical channel of intuition.

It is through intuition that Einstein received the understanding he translated into empirical facts or at least theoretical facts. He did not devise his formulas by figuring them out with his rational mind…he went out on a pond and lay in a little boat where he pondered and was still to receive the knowing.

We can know beyond empirical facts when we stand on the edge of unknowing, still, quiet and calm, receptive to what we don’t know—receptive to wisdom from above through the kingdom within, receptive to intuitive wisdom that we distinguish from mind-chatter by its peace and goodness which serves only our highest and best motives.

“Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion,” Jobs told writer Walter Isaacson in his self-titled biography.

Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” John 5:19

“The madman is the man who has lost everything except his reason. The madman’s explanation of a thing is always complete, and often in a purely rational sense…” — G.K. Chesterton, Orthodoxy

“The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition or what you will, and the solution comes to you and you don’t know how or why. All great discoveries are made in this way.” — Einstein

Jiddu Krishnamurti: “Intuition is the whisper of the soul.”
