PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE

Rain Clouds, Delicious Meals, and a City Trip

Week 107 of the photographic documentary of my daily life

Yes, we did it. We finally made it to Berlin. No, we’re really not city people and lived here now for 5 months without ever having the desire to explore the city center of Berlin.

It was raining this week too, not much, just a bit but it was better than nothing.

Thursday we weren’t sure if we should hide already in the trailer or could still finish the day as usual. But we ended up being lucky on both ends. First of all, we could finish early and do our last jump just past 4 pm, and secondly — the weather played along.

We could see massive clouds building up on the horizon but they remained nothing but empty promises.

Only late at night we could hear the first rain drops. Finally. They were desperately needed over here. The country is way too dry. Just look at the picture below. There isn’t much green grass left.

Friday was the day the predictions looked all bad (in skydivers' eyes) and very promising (for those hoping for the long-awaited rain).

Our boss didn’t want to give up and kept us on standby until lunchtime. But living right at work gave us the freedom to sleep in and enjoy a delicious breakfast.

Even though the clouds were hanging low all day long, the rain only set in that afternoon. It rained for quite some time but not long enough for what nature needed.

My mission for the day was to get through my reading list. By 3:30 pm the list had reached zero stories and I celebrated my achievement with a glass of white wine and some cheese platter. Or tapas, how I had called it.

I guess this day is all about food.

Not expected but just after dinner, our neighbor knocked and handed us two plates of pancakes. One for each of us. What a surprise and what a dessert. We never make desserts, so this was a delicious gift.

I guess it’s good to have friends.

And while Saturday began just as rainy and gray as Friday had finished, I continued with my writing and reading duties. Not without thinking of the photography challenge and the one picture I had to take.

It had started to rain again and I was listening to the sound of raindrops. I had two buckets of water outside collecting rainwater for my plants. And I was watching the drops splash again and again since the buckets were full already.

That was my picture for the day. I took out my camera and no, I did not get my zoom lens fixed yet. The autofocus still doesn’t work so I had to try my best to set the manual focus right to capture a single drop of water falling into the bucket.

I took a bunch of them and was quite pleased with this big splash causing something that looks like a crater. A crater made of water.

Sunday the skies were all blue and the sun was shining above the clouds. This was my last jump of the day. The sun was just at the right angle when I was taking the picture of the tandem pair exiting the plane.

Yes, we did it. After 5 months of living just about an hour's drive outside of the capital of Germany, we now made it to the city. And yes, we were kind of forced to.

My husband has to apply for a new passport and therefore we needed to go to the Namibian Embassy. Being already in Berlin, we decided to explore a bit more and be a tourist in this crazy city. Too much to share in this photo essay but I’m writing up a separate post about our experience.

Tuesday back to work. More sun and blue skies and blooming roses on the premises.

We had gotten a chili seedling from my dad and it was about a month ago if not even longer when we asked him if they were red or green chillis. He didn’t remember and we weren’t sure if they were ripe yet since they had been green for a long time.

Therefore my husband tried one. He’s the one loving spicy food and the reason why we had gotten this plant. He said it tasted a little bitter which is surely a sign of it not being ripe yet.

We left the plant, just watered it as normal, until one day, they just turned red.

Not we know.

These are red chillis. And we should wait a little longer until they fully ripen.
