STOIC WISDOM
Quote of the Day from Meditations
A bit of wisdom for your day and a fun challenge to implement it
Even though life in 161 A.D., the year Marcus Aurelius became Roman emperor, was quite a bit different from life now, most of the most fundamentals of the human experience have stayed the same. One of the most common daily experiences of people is still as prevalent now as they were back then: complaining.
Nobody would argue that complaining makes you happy, but still, a lot of people complain every single day. This is what Marcus Aurelius had to say about it:
“Don’t be overheard complaining about life at court. Not even to yourself.” — Marcus Aurelius
Especially this last part is relevant because this basically tells us that according to Marcus there is no room at all for complaining. Most people think that keeping a complaint from being said out loud solves the issue, but the great emperor thinks otherwise.
According to Marcus you will have to find a way to get rid of complaining altogether.
The challenge for you for today is to abandon complaining completely.
Notice whenever you feel the need to complain and turn the mood around. By noticing you will already become more conscious of your habits of thought. For more on stoic mental clarity, check out this post.
