Summary

A survey reveals that one in ten adults in Britain turn off the lights during sex to save on electricity bills, a trend more common among men.

Abstract

According to a study by Utilita Energy, a notable portion of the British adult population engages in sexual activity with the lights off primarily to reduce electricity costs, with men being twice as likely to do so than women. The practicality of this approach for significant energy savings is questioned, as the energy saved from such behavior would require extended periods of intimacy to make a noticeable difference in utility bills. The survey also touches on other money-saving activities couples perform in the dark, such as showering and reading with a flashlight, suggesting a broader trend of cost-conscious intimate behaviors.

Opinions

  • The spokesperson for Utilita Energy implies that turning off lights during sex is not a particularly effective method for saving substantial amounts of money on electricity bills unless the activity is sustained for a significant duration.
  • The article subtly suggests that the motivation behind having sex with the lights off may be multifaceted, including reasons such as romance, body insecurities, increased arousal, and practicality, with saving money being just one of many potential factors.
  • There is an implication that some individuals may consider increasing the frequency of sexual activity to make the energy-saving measure more cost-effective, rather than simply turning off the lights for a single instance of intimacy.
  • The article humorously notes that some couples extend their cost-saving measures to other aspects of their daily routines, such as following each other around to turn off lights, indicating a dedication to energy conservation that goes beyond the bedroom.

Do you have sex with the lights off? Maybe you do it because it’s romantic. Maybe you do it because you have insecurities about your body. Maybe you do it because it increases your arousal.

According to research by Utilita Energy, you may be doing it for a much more practical reason: to save money on your electricity bill. In a survey of 2,000 adults in Britain, one in ten people said they turn the lights off during sex specifically to save money on their electricity bills, and men are two times more likely to hit the switch while doing the deed.

“It would have to be an extended period of adult time to have a serious impact on your end-of-month electricity bill.”

But is lightless lovemaking really an effective way to keep money in your pocket?

Not necessarily, according to Utilita Energy’s spokesperson, who said “It would have to be an extended period of adult time to have a serious impact on your end-of-month electricity bill.”

The people surveyed may or may not consider having more sex to make it cost effective, or they may just fall back on some of the other activities couples report they do in the dark to save money, such as showering, getting dressed, and using their laptops. Some even go as far as to read with a flashlight to cut costs, and others report following their partner around the house to turn lights off behind them.
