Leadership
Quantum Leadership Will Change The World
A new world requires a brand-new mindset and visionary leaders
The 1st revolution in physics was with Newton`s Law of Motion, which unveiled the planets’ secrets and masses in motion in the macro-cosmos. Then, the 2nd revolution started with Einstein`s Theory of Relativity changing our view on time and the speed of light and then the Quantum Theory that opened up the doors of an unknown and peculiar realm. The 3rd revolution has started with the efforts to formulate both micro-cosmos and macro-cosmos in one theory — The Theory of Everything.
The quantum revolution expanded our consciousness and changed our point of view. Below are the 4 main characteristics of the quantum world.
Wave-particle duality
After the first modeling of the atoms and the electrons around the nucleus, the atomic world was thought to be like the solar system consisting of super-tiny particles. With quantum mechanics, we learned that they are either a wave or a particle. They can be both.
Uncertainty (a world of probabilities)
The macro-cosmos is deterministic, meaning that there are the cause and effect principle. Things world linear, and we can formulate the effects of a cause. The quantum world is very much different. Everything is a probability until one of them becomes a reality. This is explained by the phenomenon of quantum wave function collapse.
Super-position
A particle could be anywhere in the micro-cosmic universe until stimuli cause it to appear in a single location.
Quantum entanglement
A pair or a group of particles impact each other no matter how far they are from each other even faster than the speed of light. The tachyons or other sub-atomic particles could be the reason for such quick interactions.
After reading the quantum world characteristics above, you may argue that the macro-cosmos is different, and things are deterministic due to the cause and effect principle. You can also say that you can control many things in life.
Is that really the case?
If you look at the objects in motion, the answer is NO. However, life is NOT deterministic — it is more like the quantum world. If you have doubts, please allow me to throw some questions at you.
Can you know your future?
Do you know when you will die?
Can you control everything in your life in your relations, core family, business, career, and networks?
How many of your plans have realized over the last ten years?
How do you define fate?
When was the last time that you prayed to God to help you? Why did you ask for forgiveness if you can control everything?
Have you heard of a 100% forecasting system? Is there a system that can plan for any randomness?
How do you explain love beyond chemistry and neuroscience?
Life is not like how Laplace thought it to be.
Let`s wrap up and link the quantum world to leadership.
The business has become more complex than ever in the world, changing faster and faster with new technologies emerging one after another. Our children have already been classified as X, Y, Z, and recently as alpha generations. The climate is changing. Global mobility is increasing and changing every culture. AI is taking over jobs. Economic crises and pandemics are creating disasters. The world is not the same as before.
The job of a leader in this VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world order is much different than before. The V.U.C.A. acronym is great to explain this quantum-like process of life.
Let us try to translate this acronym to the modern-day business.
- You cannot assume a fixed growth rate in budgeting and strategic planning anymore. There is so much flux.
- any company without real-time communication and collaboration among its functions is destined to end very quickly
- a company may start small and become a market leader quickly
- data and information is everywhere; you need more to succeed
- nothing is hidden on the internet
- competition is more severe than before
- there is a huge amount of manipulation in the economic markets
- short-term outlook prevails in the business. Profit, revenue, and double-digit growth are the king
- you cannot force people to obey the past rules or manage them by fear of losing their jobs
- people easily speak up and take action to do the best thing for themselves
- technology is evolving so fast you need to make investments and upgrades continuously
- while investing in technology and machinery, you cannot miss investing in your people
- only leadership matters to make a difference
- agility is more important than productivity
- sustainability is possible only with adaptation
What is the job of a leader, then in this quantum world? Let us make a summary.
You, as a modern-day leader…
- should hire the best people in the market as a talent magnet
- should help people discover and unleash their potential within
- should implement systems made of processes that control each other (systems thinking)
- should benchmark best examples, blend them with future trends, and involve people to implement the best systems
- lead implementation of systems should be adaptive to changing conditions by the self-reliant teams who make fast and quick decisions on their own in light of company mission, vision, values, and strategic directions
- should find the right leaders, provide the resources, and empower and delegate them to succeed
- be self-aware and develop yourself
- learn in every breath from people, conditions, situations, mistakes and more
- understand and manage the differences and the diversity
- be all-embracing and accepting
- establish inclusion, equity, and belonging through diversity
- create a strong network of good, honest, and true people around you
- should have a strong leadership not only successful by results but more importantly by their characters
- should aim to do the right thing at all times
- be a role model of values and virtue and inspire others to do the same
- stand up not only for yourself but also for the others in need
- be a self-knowing person
- be the first one to aid, help, and assist
- win with people, not alone
- be generous and forgiving
- put people beyond all in all decisions
- think long term, not short term
- think for the best of the greater good
- be compassionate at all times
Even though robotics and AI may seem to take over many frontiers in business, the value, and importance of people will be more and more important than ever in a world that is losing its values, ethics more and more due addiction to speed, pleasure, and consumption.
Yes. I know it is a long list. That is why leadership in the 21st century is not easy unless you touch the hearts of the people and let their minds be free.
Cheers,
Kenan
