It is crazy how phones have taken over our lives, right? It feels like everyone’s got their eyes glued to these screens 24/7. There is hardly any time left for real human interaction, for enjoying moments with family and friends, or even for just chilling out and being present with own self. It is like the whole world revolves around these little devices and their endless array of apps. People are so caught up that they forget to look up and actually live their lives.

Honestly, I have reached a point where I am not too fond of my own phone anymore. Every time someone asks me this classic question: “Hey, what is the latest app you have downloaded?” I can’t help but roll my eyes and say: “You know, guess what, I actually do have a life beyond this phone in my hand”. Don’t get me wrong, of course I appreciate the convenience and connectivity that phones offer, but it is like we have lost the sight of what is truly important.

Have you noticed this ever? People driving their cars come to a stop at the traffic light, and they are straight to their phones — checking their messages. Don’t even get me started on the insanity of talking on the phone while driving. It is beyond aggravating. It seems as if they are the President of some country or something. They are so engrossed on their phones that they don’t even notice when the traffic light switches to green and the next thing you know, they are holding up the entire line of cars, forcing to honk just to get them moving.

I am writing this because of something I witnessed yesterday. I was at the street crossing with my friend, waiting for the walk signal. We were deep in conversation when suddenly, this girl with headphones on and her eyes glued to her phone tried to cross without even realizing she was at the crossing.

Thankfully, a guy spotted her and pulled her back just before a car could hit her. It was a close call. At first, we didn’t grasp what was going on. It was only when we heard the guy giving her an earful about ditching the darn phone away that we realized the seriousness of the situation.

Two days back, I was at the park with my friend for a walk, and I couldn’t believe what I saw. There were people who came in the park, stood there for some 15 minutes, completely absorbed in their phones. It was like they were in their own little world, oblivious to everything around them. These people, even blocked the walking track, trying to figure out something. After a while, they suddenly cheered and then left the park. It was clear they were not there for a leisurely stroll or some peaceful time in nature — they were just caught up in some silly app.

I can’t help but wonder where this world is heading with all this phone obsession. We are losing touch with reality, trading genuine experiences for digital distractions. It is a bit concerning, to be honest.

In conclusion, ours and the lives of those around us, truly depend on our willingness to engage with the world in a meaningful and mindful way. It is about lifting our eyes from these glowing screens and directing towards the faces, the landscapes, and the experiences that enrich our existence.
