Summary

Beau, a regular customer at a cafe, becomes infatuated with Virginia, a new employee, after a brief encounter, and longs to deepen their relationship despite his nervousness about expressing his emotions.

Abstract

The narrative revolves around Beau, a man who frequents a cafe and is taken aback by the unexpected presence of Virginia, a woman he had a intimate encounter with the night before, replacing his friend's girlfriend Liv as the evening shift worker. Throughout his day at work, he is preoccupied with thoughts of Virginia and regrets not staying in bed with her that morning. Despite his usual self-assured demeanor in the workplace, he fears revealing his vulnerability to Virginia, worried he might come off as too eager or desperate. His interactions with her at the cafe reignite his desire, and he is encouraged by her enthusiasm for romance, leading him to invite her to his home. The story captures Beau's internal struggle between his masculine identity and the softer, more emotional side he wishes to share with Virginia.

Opinions

  • Beau is emotionally affected by his encounter with Virginia, which challenges his self-perception as emotionally reserved.
  • He is conflicted about how to balance his professional assertiveness with the vulnerability he feels in his personal life.
  • Beau's ex-wife's comments about his emotional expressiveness have left him insecure about how he should interact with women he is interested in.
  • Despite his internal conflict, Beau is optimistic about the potential for a romantic relationship with Virginia, as indicated by his invitation for her to come home with him.
  • The scent of pumpkin spice and the memory of Virginia's soft expression are powerful sensory triggers for Beau, symbolizing his deep attraction to her.

Beau knew that Tim’s girlfriend Liv was not going to be working her usual late night shift, but he had no idea her replacement would be this goddess.

His goddess.

He had not been able to get her out of his mind all day. Today was the first time he was going to ask for beer or wine, instead of his usual set of four esprssso shots he got to keep him going through the night at work.

When he saw Virginia at the counter, he did not need anything. He had not wanted to go to the office, and instead stay in bed with her that morning. But he had a huge meeting at work and had to go in. He wanted to call her but he was nervous. Beau had never been good at keeping his emotions in check with a woman. His ex-wife had said there was nothing surprising about him and he was more like a woman than she was.

At work he was shrewd, but with the woman he loved he wanted to be soft and gentle.

Open.

He was afraid if he called Virginia too soon she would think he was a punk. Even though the way she had clung to him in bed made him feel like a real man, he did not want to scare her off.

“Hi,” she said softly, her soft voice a purr that made him want to grab her, take her to the back and have his way with her again. He remembered the sweetness of her body under his from the previous night.

“Hi,” he said. “It sounds stupid to say I did not know you worked here, but I am so used to seeing Liv.”

“Oh you come here often?” she tilted her head to the side and he was lost in her eyes.

“Yeah, Liv’s boyfriend works with me. I kind of helped them get together.”

“Did you?”

“Yeah,” he looked down at his bare fingers. He had not worn a wedding band for awhile but it still was new to him. Not that he wanted to be married to his ex anymore, but that he was single and could be with Virginia and something could happen between them.

“I love a good romance!” she exclaimed. Her eyes widened as he realized she wondered if he thought she meant them. “I mean —”

“Come home with me tonight, I have been thinking about you all day…”

Her soft expression and the scent of pumpkin spice stained his memories when he went back to his office to wait for when she was off and he could pick her up and take her back to his place.
