Promotion and Demotion
What to do when days are busy?

In the competitive realm of League of Legends, I recently achieved a remarkable rank promotion. It followed a string of exceptional matches that bolstered my confidence in the game.
However, the reality beyond the screen isn’t always as straightforward or victorious.
Despite my best intentions, setting up an ideal plan or routine for productivity and discipline often unravels after a few days. Sometimes, external factors influence the outcome, something that’s beyond my immediate control.
Just a fortnight ago, my days were exceptionally productive. I churned out a plethora of YouTube content, surpassed my article writing targets, squeezed in exercise routines, and savored quality time with my family.
These activities lent me a sense of accomplishment by day’s end. Yet, last week was starkly different; work demanded the lion’s share of my time, leaving my well-intended plans merely etched on my weekly checklist, promptly forgotten.
Reflecting on my experiences in League of Legends, I’ve articulated the frustration of being demoted in the game. Climbing the ranks requires meticulous effort, making it easy to fall off the pinnacle of success (read more). Ironically, this sentiment mirrored my current circumstances.
As much as I relished the feeling of being productive and disciplined, the inevitable “rebound” felt discouraging, despite a week dedicated to securing my family’s livelihood.
In such demanding scenarios, energy depletion or the lack of conducive environments becomes the norm.
For instance, during a work trip, I anticipated working late into the night. To compensate, I ideated for a new article beforehand, planning to craft it before bedtime.
Alas, although time was available, energy was scarce, and a lack of necessary resources, like internet access and a laptop, hindered my progress. Consequently, I missed numerous crucial tasks:
- I couldn’t maintain my YouTube content schedule.
- My writing momentum staggered.
- I DIDN’T FIND THE TIME TO INDULGE IN LOL.
- This lack of time meant no opportunities to lose matches in-game.
- And this results in not doing the as-committed exercise routines.
I extend my earnest hope that you never experience such frustrations. But why?
Because although I ascended in League of Legends, I suffered a demotion in real life. I reverted to my former self, or that’s how it seems as I pen these thoughts.
All that remains is the daunting task of recovery — redefining habits, restructuring plans, and orchestrating a path toward functional normalcy. Goals aren’t achieved through self-pity or sympathy.
How does one navigate such situations? To preempt such challenges, consider these three key strategies:
- Set Realistic Goals: Acknowledge my significant error — setting ambitious goals in a packed week akin to a previously free one. While aiming high isn’t wrong, realism mitigates the inevitable frustration and burnout of unmet targets.
- Preemptive Action: Proactivity is key. In a freer week, if I accomplished 3 articles and plan to replicate this in a busier period, I would aim for 6 articles earlier. This foresight maintains momentum, counteracts lag, and assures me that things are manageable.
- Avoid Over-Dramatization: Post a hectic week, rather than dwelling on its shortcomings, embrace a mature approach. This psychological shift from complaint to acceptance is pivotal in handling unforeseen situations with grace.
This narrative stems from a hope that my lessons resonate with you. So, what’s your perspective on navigating similar situations, and how would you approach it?
