Summary

The text is a reflective piece on the creative process of writing poetry, emphasizing the importance of taking breaks and finding joy in everyday tasks to enhance creativity and productivity.

Abstract

The author of the text, Nicole, shares a personal glimpse into the whimsical and non-linear journey of crafting a poem. Beginning with the blank canvas of a new file, journal, or screen, the process is depicted as one that is frequently interrupted by daily life's mundane tasks, such as checking emails, household chores, and social interactions. These interruptions, rather than hindering the creative process, are presented as integral to the poet's inspiration and output. The text suggests that embracing life's simple pleasures, like enjoying music, dancing, or connecting with neighbors, can lead to moments of clarity and creativity, ultimately enriching the poem and providing a sense of fulfillment. The day's tasks are symbolically postponed as playfulness becomes the driving force behind the work. Nicole invites readers to explore more of her writings and offers ways to support her work, including Medium membership and a 'Buy Me a Coffee' donation.

POEM’S PERMISSION TO PLAY

Postpone the Day

Does your to-do list dwindle when all your multi-tasking overlaps your purpose?

New file, blank screen, crisp lined journal Breathe, pause, check my email Outline ideas, decide on a title, first sentence complete Make a coffee, unload the dishwasher, take out the trash

Text a friend, hours later recover from jokes, mockery, and sarcasm Delete the first sentence, shuffle new ideas, change the image Soak in the sunshine while getting the mail, wave to an emerging neighbor Lightbulb moment alters the title, leading to another image switch

Turn on classic rock music. Its energy beats out a poem’s path Laptop down, embarrassingly dance around and grab my air-guitar A smile on, breathless laughter, catch a glance of bliss in my mirror Work done, postpone the day. All I want to do is play.
