Play the Long Game | New Writers Welcome — January Competition

A small piece of advice for all the self-doubters out there.

Persistence.

Imagine you’re a masterful musician, an extraordinary dancer, a hilarious stand-up comedian, or a marvelous actor.

You’ve rehearsed over and over, determined to get it right. You set the stage, the lights, and the speakers. You picked just the right outfit. There’s no doubt in your mind — you’re gonna knock it outta the park tonight!

Everything you’ve done has built right up to this performance, this very moment, center stage. You push your anxieties aside and take a deep breath… Then, you get out there and you give it all you’ve got!

At the end of your brilliant performance, you take a bow, then stand up tall. You look out at all the empty seats with a big, silly grin, exuding the utmost pride in a job well done.

And you do this, time and again, until every seat out there is filled. Until there isn’t a venue in the world big enough for the audience you’ve amassed.

That’s persistence.

I learned that when someone wants to award you for doing well, they won’t say anything. They won’t validate your performance until the time is right. They won’t reward you until you’ve proven yourself with persistence.

Because if you need constant validation to do your best, then your performance is like a house built on sand.

My New Year’s Resolution is to keep working at my goals, no matter what, whether someone is or isn’t cheering me on. I’m doing it for me.

I’m playing the long game.
