Summary

In "Pimp My Ride," a modern twist on the classic "Cinderella," the Fairy Godmother adapts to the 21st century by acquiring a used orange Mustang to fulfill her magical duties, showcasing her resourcefulness and the evolution of fairy tale magic in contemporary times.

Abstract

"Pimp My Ride" is a flash fiction piece that humorously reimagines the role of the Fairy Godmother in a modern setting. The story reveals her dissatisfaction with the misconception that she creates magical transportation from mundane objects like pumpkins and mice. Faced with a lack of funds and the changing nature of her clientele, she turns to Larry, a thrifty used car salesman, to procure a suitable vehicle. Despite the Mustang's less-than-perfect condition, she sees its potential and negotiates for additional features like fluffy dice and a stereo system, illustrating her adaptability and cleverness. This tale serves as a prequel to "The Fairy Godmother in Hollywood," explaining the origins of the iconic pumpkin Mustang mentioned in the subsequent story.

Opinions

  • The Fairy Godmother is portrayed as pragmatic and contemporary, debunking traditional fairy tale myths about her methods.
  • The story pokes fun at the perceived glamour of fairy tale magic, contrasting it with the reality of limited resources and unconventional solutions.
  • The character of Larry, the used car salesman, is depicted as somewhat unsavory but resourceful, reflecting the Fairy Godmother's own adaptability in a world where traditional magic is less effective.
  • The Fairy Godmother's acceptance of the Mustang's flaws and her ability to negotiate extras like fluffy dice and a stereo system demonstrate her shrewdness and resourcefulness.
  • The narrative implies a critique of the modern world where even fairy tale figures must contend with financial constraints and the need to improvise with available resources.

The Fairy Godmother clicked her tongue. This simply wouldn’t do. Did the imbeciles really believe she created carriages out of pumpkins and mice became horses?

Oh no, she needed wheels fast — the best the 21st century offered, or rather the 20th century. Her funds dwindled. Rich princes rather be playboys and pay for tarts.

Larry, the used car salesman who recycled his undies, offered her an orange Mustang.

“Perfect.”

“You don’t want that one — skid marks,” whispered Mickey.

“Don’t worry, the seats are plastic, the crust will wipe off.”

Micky cringed. The chore belonged to him.

“I’ll throw in fluffy dice and stereo.”

“Sold!”

Note: “Pimp My Ride” is a modern spoof inspired by the fairy tale classic, “Cinderella”, and is a prequel to the story “The Fairy Godmother in Hollywood” (readers were asking about the pumpkin Mustang).
