COVID-19 OUTBREAK

Physical Separation, Not Social Distancing

In times of distress, social bonding is more desirable.

Social distancing is the buzzword these days.

Everywhere you go, everywhere you look, every News Channel you watch, they’re talking about social distancing. But is that the correct phrase in the current situation?

We are in the midst of a situation that is causing massive public anxiety. During times of turmoil and uncertainty, people need support from each other, not social distancing. Yes, the situation warrants that we don’t mingle with each other because that speeds up the spread of the virus. Which means we need to avoid physical contact with each other.

The right term should be Physical Separation instead of Social Distancing.

The main problem that I see with the term Social Distancing is that it implies that it is acceptable for us to have social gatherings as long as we don’t get too close to each other. It is not practical to have social groups and maintain a distance at all times.

With modern technology, we don’t need to be in a physical gathering to have social interactions. Earlier, my daughter told me that she was going for a walk with her friend. What she meant was that they were both walking in their surroundings while chatting on the phone. They were practicing Physical Separation, not Social Distancing.

I participated in five Toastmasters speech contests this week. They were conducted over the internet using the Zoom meetings platform. It was a learning experience for all, and we had a blast connecting with our fellow Toastmasters. It was more fun than the usual in-person contest we always have. I have seen stories about people celebrating birthdays and having virtual lunches and wine parties. We don’t need social distancing; we cannot afford social distancing. What we need and must practice is Physical Separation.

I am not isolated or socially distant from friends and family. We have more social interactions in our family these days than we did before. My nephews are drawing up plans for a live virtual concert for the family members. Several of them play musical instruments and sing.

I am looking forward to having the time of my life.

You can let others tell you what it means to be successful, or you can decide it for yourself.”
