Summary

Two pets, Cooper and Buddy, discuss the human rule of "no pets on beds," with Buddy confidently disregarding it and Cooper questioning his approach.

Abstract

The narrative revolves around a conversation between Cooper, a dog who proudly admits to sleeping on his humans' bed, and Buddy, his feline friend. Despite a household rule prohibiting pets from sleeping on beds, Cooper finds himself welcomed as a foot warmer. Buddy, however, takes a more rebellious stance, sleeping on the bed regardless of invitations. The story highlights the pets' differing perspectives on human rules and their strategies for cohabitation. The piece is part of a larger collection of short fiction stories, specifically the Random Word Drabble challenge, where writers craft 100-word stories based on a daily random word, in this case, "rule." This creative exercise aims to stimulate creativity, establish a writing routine, and provide entertainment.

Opinions

  • Cooper appears to be a rule-follower, unsure about his actions when they conflict with human rules.
  • Buddy is portrayed as confident and indifferent to human rules, believing his actions will lead to the rule being forgotten.
  • The author seems to use the pets' interaction to reflect on the nature of rules and how they are perceived and followed by different individuals.
  • The story suggests that personal charm and usefulness (like being a good foot warmer) can sometimes override established rules.
  • The inclusion of the Random Word Drabble challenge indicates the author's endorsement of creative writing exercises for skill development and enjoyment.

“I slept on the humans’ bed last night,” Cooper beams to his feline sidekick.

“They have a rule, so why would they let your big self on the bed?” asks Buddy.

“There’s a rule?”

“Indeed! No pets on beds.”

“They say I’m a very good foot warmer.”

Buddy rolls his eyes and shrugs, “I sleep on the bed every night, invitation or not.”

Cooper scratches an ear and wonders, “What am I doing wrong?”

“The real question is, what am I doing right?” Buddy replies, then adds, “Stick with me Coop, old chap, soon they’ll have forgotten their ridiculous rule.”
