Volume 3-What a Awesome Place for Our 40th Wedding Anniversary Trip

Welcome back. Did you guess our location? Probably not many did. We are “way out there” on the Gaspe peninsula in Quebec, Canada. Returning 40 years later. Technically 39. It didn’t disappoint then or now.

As I wrote in my last article, we arrived here a little late, it was after 7 PM last night (October 1st). Too dark to take photos here in town. Except one I tried to get of the rising moon. Hard to capture with an iPhone.

The hotel is nice with a great view of the main attraction here. Can you guess what it is? Well, here it is:

A beautiful site by itself. But added to the overall view you get when driving into town, this is what you see. The view coming down the mountain:

Absolutely stunning!

A Fun Day Today

This morning, we started the day by buying tickets for a boat tour that goes out around Perce Rock and also around Bonaventure Island.

Perce rock is huge and originally had 2 arches, with only one now remaining. The arch that collapsed was hit by lightning in 1845.

After breakfast, we went for a walk along the boardwalk and enjoyed a sunny early October day.

The temperatures were in the low to mid 60s. Can’t complain for October this far North.

Before we knew, it was time for the boat tour. I was excited since Bonaventure Island is a bird sanctuary, and is part of a National Park in Perce.

The island was inhabited until 1971 by farmers who used sailboats in the summer and horse drawn sleds in the winter to reach the mainland. At that time the 35 families living there had to leave as the island was acquired by the Province of Quebec. According to the narration on the boat, the island had no water, electricity, or telephones.

The island is home to more than 280,000 birds and together with Perce Rock became a National Park in 1985.

And Then There Were Birds

I will write a separate article on the birds we saw on the tour. I was able to get some photos even though photography is difficult from a boat.

We have also had some awesome seafood. Last night I had salmon encrusted with peppercorns, rice, and a beet/apple salad.
