People who Destroy History Intend to Repeat It
And Republicans intend to repeat the worst of it.
So, Project 2025 is in the news a lot the past few days, and for good reason. It is the blueprint for a conservative takeover of America, turning the whole country into a theocracy where, among other things, the EPA is dismantled and queer and trans folx are considered “pornographic.” Don’t take my word for it, though — go read their plan, which they published online and talk about openly like it’s a good thing.
When I talked about trans genocide in past articles, this is what I was talking about. When I talked about how taking rights away from people and declaring them not equal to you makes you the bad guys, they didn’t care because that was the point. These people want to erase the rights of people who are not like them, among many other terrible things, for reasons that I cannot even begin to comprehend.
Book burning and literally rewriting the history books was only the beginning, make no mistake. They want to take racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and bigotry in general and make it law. These people looked at America’s horrible racist past and said “let’s have more of that.”
They say that people who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it. These people, however, know the history, and they crave those good ol’ days where straight cis white men ruled everything and everyone else was a second-class citizen. The plan, then, is to simply destroy or rewrite history because they 100% intend to repeat it.
The atrocities against BIPOC and queer people. The antisemitism. Fascist or quasi-fascist theocracy. Literal genocides against anyone that they don’t like. This is what they want. This is what they crave. They’re not even pretending to hide it anymore — they’re just putting their disgusting racism, bigotry, homophobia, antisemitism, and utter disregard for anyone they deem as “other” on full display for the world to see.
Make no mistake, Trump was the spark that started this raging forest fire, but this has been in the works since long before he came on the political scene. I wrote a few days ago about what would happen if Trump died and came to the conclusion that the Trumpist wing might split into a few factions that would have trouble uniting around a single leader.
However, since learning about Project 2025, I don’t think Trump matters at all anymore. Any Republican candidate who gets into office can implement this plan — Trump was only a proof of concept. He showed that it was possible to do untold damage to the US government that we are still discovering the ramifications of years later. They just want it on a grander scale with someone more competent.
Project 2025 is funded by every big-money group on the right — the Heritage Foundation is front-and-center in this project if that means anything to you, but all the big players are there. You can read the list for yourself, again, on their website. The whole thing is over 900 pages and I haven’t had a chance to dig into it, but it’s all there for everyone to read.
We cannot let this come to pass. We must vote against every conservative politician and ensure that they do not gain the presidency in the foreseeable future, because otherwise a whole bunch of Americans will find themselves second-class citizens and there will not be much that we can do to stop it.
Do not try to rely on the balance of power between the legislature, the courts, and the executive branch. We have seen what damage a maniac can do to the court system with Trump’s whack-a-do nominations to the Supreme Court and all other levels, and another Republican can and will do it again. Again, Trump was just a proof-of-concept. This plan would take Trump’s incompetence and make it ten times as damaging by utilizing people who know what they’re doing.
Make no mistake, if you are BIPOC, a woman, queer, or belong to a non-Christian religion, supporting the Republicans will not save you. They do not care about you even if you do support them — they want to bring white men back into the sole position of power and authority in this country and will trample their own supporters to make it happen. Once they have the power, you will not be in a position to stop them.
It is like voting for the face-eating leopard party and then being surprised when the leopards eat your face. “Oh no, I thought the leopards would eat the faces of people I don’t like! I didn’t expect them to eat my face!” It’s an idiotic and shortsighted approach to be sure.
The right is out of control and rampaging towards fascism. Many of us have been calling them on it for a while now, and this is the culmination of that hard-rightward shift. If we want to keep freedom and democracy as tenants of America, they cannot gain power in 2025, or ever again if we have anything to say about it.
Fight back. Organize. Vote. Do anything and everything within your power to keep this hellscape from coming to pass. We cannot let them win.
Never forget: people who don’t study history are doomed to repeat it, but those who destroy, hide, or rewrite history fully intend to repeat it. The right fully intends to repeat history and all that entails.
