People Are Priority, Not AI (thank You Medium)
Grateful to the moon and back
Today when I woke up, the first thing that I saw in my feed was a new post from Buster Benson.
He is part of the Medium team and he wrote a post about recent spam activities and AI content on Medium and what are they planning to do against it.
You know that I was frustrated with AI content on Medium from my articles and comments.
I simply couldn’t accept that there are people who are earning money by just clicking “generate article“ without putting their soul and heart on paper.
We share here our deepest thoughts, our problems, and our hearts, and yet some fake-generated articles get reads and followers.
I am happy that Medium is against those kinds of profiles and content.
“So, to state it plainly: we will revoke Partner Program enrollment from writers that publish spam, fraud, AI-generated stories, and other low-quality content that demonstrates clear misalignment with our mission. And we’re proud to protect the community from this kind of behavior.” — Buster Benson
He also spoke about the recent suspension of accounts and shared some of the reasons why your account can be banned.
So here are some of the reasons:
- Spam, impersonation, phishing, and crypto scams
- Use of multiple fake membership accounts
- AI-generated or plagiarized stories
- Coordinated inauthentic engagement (explained in detail below)
We see paywalled stories with a majority of engagement from a repeat set of members who heavily engage in consistently low-value/generic ways over an extended period of time. Seemingly inauthentic activity like that could get you flagged by the systems meant to catch automated fraudulent actors. And if flagged, your enrollment in the Partner Program could be suspended temporarily or permanently, determined on a case-by-case review. — Buster Benson
I was a bit confused about the last reason, so I asked some questions in the comments.
I have a question about this part. I joined the Medium Partner Program 2 months ago (recently I upgraded to Friend of Medium).
As I am new here, I didn’t get any reads until I started to engage with others and read their stories. I tried to only write, but that didn’t work. Now I genuinely engage with writers that I like, but I have 5–10 favorites among them that I can’t wait to see their new stories, and I engage with each one of them every time.
Also, I joined some publications for only Friends of Medium, for genuine engagements and similar reasons, so I am wondering if that’s breaking the rules? If I am enjoying those stories every day, commenting on them, and want to find like-minded people here, is that okay or should I leave those kinds of publications and not leave comments for the same writers every day (even if I love their stories)?
I am kind of unsure how to act sometimes, and I really love being here and I have met so many amazing people, so it would be really sad to be flagged just for supporting my new friends in a genuine way.
I am still waiting for his reply and I will let you know when I get it.
What is your opinion about this whole situation?
Let me know in the comments!
