Passing the Security+ as a hobby

No biggie! let’s make some magic

If you’re struggling to get a good study session in with all the hectic things that life throws at you know that you don’t really need as much as you think in order to retain the majority of the information in order to pass the CompTIA Security+ Exam. Take it from me, I work a full time job, spend time doing CTFs in TryHackMe, have a good workout, and even spent time with family and friends. The trick that worked for me is eighty twenty rule, this simply states that twenty percent of the effort amounts to eighty percent of the results and as fate would have it all you need to pass the exam is a seven hundred and fifty score which means about seventy-five percent of the test. Now that that’s out of the way it’s easier said than done since there will be days where you won’t have the energy or focus needed to even make one session count. In that case I’d recommend you try and give it an honest effort for about five minutes straight without looking at the time or getting distracted, if you find the motivation after the time is up then try to keep going for as long as you possibly can. Remember, try and make whatever amount of studying you’re doing count as much as possible, not just reading for the sake of reading. Or if it’s any easier, try picturing it as you don’t know when you’ll be able to get another good study session in so your best bet is to make the current one count.

Now in terms of resources I’d recommend going over to Professor Messer's video series on YouTube since it’s free and he has a ton of great content plus he also does mostly study sessions where he asks questions in the same format as the test and goes over why an answer was correct as well as what the other options in that question are and why those are not correct. His study sessions are about 2 hours but only the first half is actual study and the second hour is more of a Q&A style where you could ask him directly about any topic or just share your thoughts on how you’re progressing with the material. The second resource is a test practice site where you simulate taking a test with twenty-five different levels of difficulty, or you could take tests based on specific topics for the Security+.

It may seem as if this was very little to study with but remember, if you have various other things to get done during your day you won’t have much time to get fancy with your study material so staying simple and efficient is key to learning the material in as little time as possible so that it won’t interfere too much with everything else. It worked for me and who knows maybe it could work for you as well, just remember to stay simple and efficient with your time and study material.

In conclusion, the CompTIA Security+ is not a very hard exam, but it does cover a lot of topics and acronyms that make it a very tedious task to learn all of it in just one day. However, I do encourage you to give it your best and that whatever little time you can give to study it and better yourself is time well spent instead of doom scrolling on social media.
