The World (as we perceive it) is a reflection of (e.g. “shows us”) our own self (our own view, assumptions and values).
A Reflection of Our Own Self
a reflection of (e.g. “shows us”) our own self (our own view, assumptions and values)
When we accept the fact (from part #1), that we are unique and that how we perceive our surrounding, our environment, the current situation… is completely unique to us as well — then we can begin to understand that we shape the world around us, not physically, but how we perceive it.
Let that sink in…
So, as humans, we perceive the world always through our own eyes, through our own filters and assumptions of what we hold true or want to believe to be the truth. An interesting, short video may help to grasp the full impact of this and explains it a lot better than I can:
What That Has to Do With Me
While taking some time to reflect on this simple sentence, quite a few, partially unpleasant, things occurred to me.
Whenever I criticised the behaviour of someone in the past, was I actually saying something about myself? About how I perceive the other, the situation?
I believe that I’m a very cerebral person, thinking a bit too much and trying to be always logical. Most of the time my conscious, intellectual self tries to give understanding to all the things I see and perceive. It tries to explain everything — and that is how I engage the world: trying to explain everything. I already got feedback from my kids that this can be annoying…
This fits well one of the statements from the above video:
Every behaviour that we do, we do to reduce uncertainty.
So, when I try to explain what I experience … I try to reduce uncertainty? 🤔
And when I criticised, that my former boss wasn’t treating people from the heart, although he understands well the modern concepts of people-first leadership… was I actually saying more about myself than about him? Was I talking about what I perceive? Sure! Is what I perceive heavily influenced by how I see the world? Yes — that’s what this sentence tells us.
Wow.
I will go back in my memories and find more occasions like this one… and learn from my mistakes, learn more about myself… to hopefully become a better me.
